If they refuse to hand over their ID, it’s technically a hit and run. You can take down their license plate number and report it to the police, but the police may not show up.

The rules vary by province, but are largely the same as B.C. – You must report an accident such as serious injury, death or impaired driving. But in any state, the police may not show up for the doorbell.

Some states, including Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia, require you to call the police to report an accident if the damage is more than $2,000. Others do not specify a specific amount.

In B.C., if your car is hit by someone’s door and you have optional collision insurance, their liability insurance will pay for the damage, said Lindsay Wilkins, spokeswoman for the province’s state-owned title insurer, Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC).

“If the damage to be repaired is less than the deductible, there will be no claim,” Wilkins said.

Comprehensive insurance will cover you if your shopping trolley is pushed or rolled into your car – if you have it.

In addition to getting their information, make sure to get a picture of their license plate and damage.

Or, if it’s a minor scratch that can be easily removed, you may decide to leave it alone.
