Yellowstone: Kayce and Monica clash over his job
Yellowstone is now in its fourth season on Paramount Network and viewers are keen to find out which Dutton family members survived. At the end of season three, some anonymous assassins targeted the family, who own the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. The prequel series called Y: 1883 will address how the ranch was founded and here is what we know so far.
What is the Yellowstone prequel about?
News of the Yellowstone origin series was announced at the start of February 2021 and on February 7, a short teaser was released.
The clip was shown during Super Bowl and fans saw a wooden sign saying Y: 1883.
A mysterious voice was heard saying: “I don’t care if you live or die, but should you live, you tell them about me.”
Fans have already expressed their excitement, with one saying on Twitter: “I was in a bad mood til I found out Yellowstone is getting a prequel and I cannot wait [sic].”
The series will air on Paramount Plus and as the title suggests, it will be set in the year when the Wild West was becoming more established.

The Wild West is also known as the American Frontier, or the Old West, and it refers to anything telling the story of a wave of American expansion.
The era started in the early 17th century with the first Europeans settling in the West.
This particular period of history lasted until the mid-1900s when Alaska and Hawaii became US states.
The Yellowstone prequel will tell the story of one family in particular – the Duttons – who travelled West to start a new life.
Coming from a background of poverty, the family hopes to find salvation in Montana, which has been described as the promised land.
The origin series will follow the family across the Great Plains as they experience the trials and tribulations of “untamed America”.
Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan will serve as executive producer, but none of the original cast are likely to star in the prequel.
The original Yellowstone series is set at the Chief Joseph Ranch in Montana, which doubles up as the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.
The ranch was built between 1914 and 1917, towards the end of the Wild West era.
There is a chance fans will get to see the stunning ranch again as part of the prequel series as the Duttons are expected to make it their new home.

The site on which the ranch sits has a history dating back to the early 1800s when the American Frontier was only just beginning.
Native tribes had left a trail which was later followed by Chief Joseph – the leader of a Nez Perce tribe.
Fans may also get to see some of the native tribes in the new series as they make their way across Western America.
Viewers have taken to Reddit to discuss the new prequel, with one saying: “I figured it was going to be about a young John [Dutton], looks like it’s much earlier than that.”
Some fans have suggested another spin-off featuring a young John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner in the original) will air at a later date.
Y:1883 is likely to focus on the earlier generations of the Dutton family as they establish themselves in Montana.
The original series is set in the late 1990s, so none of the original cast would exist in the new origin show.
The prequel is part of a larger deal between Sheridan, ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment including five seasons of new or returning series every year.
The deal is expected to last for five years, so fans can look forward to plenty more content.
