The release date of The Crown Season 3 is fastly approaching. While fans are looking forward to actors like Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter taking over the famed roles, many in particular are wondering if Gillian Anderson will show up in the third season as Margaret Thatcher.
‘The Crown’ comes back in November
The third season of The Crown will premiere on Netflix on November 17. Colman is taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Claire Foy. Bonham Carter is taking over the role of Princess Margaret from Vanessa Kirby.
Other stars of the third season include Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, Ben Daniels as Lord Snowdon, Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother, and Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
Several others have been cast to appear across both the third and fourth seasons, including Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker-Bowles, Emma Corrin as Diana Spencer, Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten, and Anderson as Prime Minister Thatcher.
What Gillian Anderson says about playing Margaret Thatcher
Because The Crown films two seasons back-to-back and retains its cast for two seasons at a time, Anderson’s casting was announced with the third season’s crew. However, Anderson should not be expected to be seen until the fourth season. The third season takes place from 1964 to 1977. Thatcher did not rise to power until 1979.
On her role as Thatcher, Anderson said in a Netflix statement, “I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of The Crown and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman. Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface and, dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era.”
This isn’t the first time Thatcher has been portrayed on-screen. Patricia Hodge played her in The Falklands Play and Andrea Riseborough portrayed her in the 2008 television film, The Long Walk to Finchley. She is also the main subject of two films, 2009’s Margaret, in which she was portrayed by Lindsay Duncan, and most recently, 2011’s Iron Lady, where she was portrayed by Meryl Streep.
What will ‘The Crown’ Season 3 be about?
Though the third season will precede the time of Thatcher, there are many pivotal events in British history that the season will cover.
Events in the season are set to include the decolonization of Africa and the Caribbean, the Apollo 11 moon landing, how Wilson was elected prime minister, the Aberfan disaster, and more. It will also cover the rocky marriage of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowden and the introduction of Princess Anne and Prince Charles. The prince’s early romance with Parker-Bowles will also be shown.
If you can’t wait for your royal fix, revisit the first two seasons of The Crown on Netflix now.
