Who plays Gemma's mum in Coronation Street and who did she play in Casualty?

Coronation Street’s Gemma Winters has found herself unexpectedly reuniting with a family member after her mum returned to town.

Bernie Winters made her move to Weatherfield to help out pregnant Gemma and to prove herself as a good mother.

Here is everything you need to know about the actress who plays the character, and the parts she played before.

Who plays Gemma Winter’s mum?

Jane Hazlegrove joined the Coronation Street cast as Gemma Winter’s estranged mother last month.

Bernie has been absent from Gemma and brother Paul Foreman’s lives, and is described as ‘an old raver who still sees herself as a free spirit. She is not one to be tied down to a man, a job or any responsibilities, especially when it means hard work for her.’

And she’s not been up to much good since her arrival, first stealing her daughter’s urine to fake, and then sell, positive pregnancy tests.

Bernie also gets caught shoplifting while out shopping for baby clothes, and later coming on to Gemma’s partner Chesney Brown.

Who did Jane Hazlegrove play in Casualty?

Jane’s most prominent role was in Casualty where she played Kathleen ‘Dixie’ Dickson for a decade from 2006.

She arrived on the medical drama as a paramedic transferred from another hospital alongside a friend.

Her 10-year run in Weatherfield saw her tangled in a number of storylines, including accidentally running over a girl while driving an ambulance.

Dixie also forced herself to marry friend and colleague Jeff Collier – despite being a lesbian – to appease herd father whom didn’t approve of her sexuality.

The character also suffers further heartbreak after her love interest Carol Walcott – a prison parole officer – and friend and husband Jeff tragically die.

Jane left the soap after Dixie finally got her happy ended; leaving the soap with love interest and fellow paramedic Jess Cranham, daughter Olivia and dog.

The actress’ other roles include fleeting roles in Holby City, Doctors, The Bill and A Touch of Frost.
