1899 has left Netflix viewers with plenty of questions as the mystery behind the Prometheus continued to unravel. At the end of the series it was revealed the Prometheus was not a ship after all, it was the name of a project assessing people’s minds. Fans are keen to find out the significance of the ships’ names.

What do the ship names Prometheus and Kerberos mean?

The eerie series follows Maura Franklin (played by Emily Beecham) as she searches for her missing brother.

She believes her brother was on board the Prometheus, a ship that disappeared months previously.

The series takes place on board the Kerberos, a ship transporting migrants from London to New York.

When the passengers come across an abandoned ship, strange goings-on, including deaths, start taking place.

Viewers are keen to find out whether there is any meaning behind the ship’s names.

The Cambridge Dictionary definition of Prometheus is “in Greek mythology, a demigod who stole fire from Mount Olympus”.

The reference book adds: “Oceanus tells Prometheus he should keep his mouth shut and stop rocking the boat.

“But Prometheus, who can divine the future, has a trump.”

As the leaders behind Project Prometheus have the ability to change reality, this could be a nod to Greek mythology.

As for Kerberos, there are two definitions that are very different.

Kerberos may refer to a computer-network authentication protocol.

The protocol allows nodes, or redistribution points, communicating over a non-secure network to prove their identity to one another in a secure way.

Interestingly, the protocol was named after the character Kerberos from Greek mythology, the ferocious three-headed guard dog of Hades.

Kerberos, or Cerberus, guarded the gates of the underworld to prevent the dead from leaving.

The ship acted as a prison for the passengers as they relived the same simulation again and again.

This idea that they could never escape could have come from the Greek myth.

Some viewers have linked the series to the film Event Horizon, from 1997.

The film is set in 2047 and it follows a crew of astronauts sent on a rescue mission after a missing spaceship.

Some theories from 1899 suggest the passengers are all in purgatory – a place or state of suffering for the souls of sinners who are expiating their sins before going to heaven.

On the theme of purgatory, the series has also been linked to Life on Mars.

At the end of the series, it was revealed Maura had been on board a spaceship called Prometheus.

She was actually living in the year 2099, and Project Prometheus had been taken over by her brother Ciaran while she was in the simulation.

As for whether Project Prometheus will be explored in season two, the series is yet to be officially renewed.

However, the show’s creators said they hoped it would be a multi-season show.

1899 is on Netflix now.
