The Walking Dead: World Beyond is the latest spin-off of the zombie-killing mega-franchise. Following the success of Fear the Walking Dead, AMC quickly commissioned another series in the universe, but this one is very different. The showrunners confirmed there will only be two seasons of the series.

Why is The Walking Dead: World Beyond ending?

The Walking Dead has expanded massively over the last 10 years since the main series originally debuted in 2010.

Since then, there have been two spin-offs, video game tie-ins, and novels, with talk of a Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) movie.

World Beyond is just the latest in a long line of projects, but this one won’t be lasting as long as the others.

However, this isn’t due to cancellation by AMC, but it is rather the result of the showrunners originally intending the show to be a short story.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Matt Negrete explained: “The thing about World Beyond, it was always about how can we make this feel different?

“How can we support expectations in a lot of ways? And one of those is not having it necessarily be open-ended.

“I’m kind of two minds about it because right now we’re breaking episode seven of season two with the writers, and we’ve all fallen in love with these characters.

“So, I think for all of us, we feel like we could write these characters forever.

“But, at the same time, it’s nice to be able to approach a series from beginning to end kind of knowing what our ending is going to be and working towards that ending.”

Each season consists of 10 episodes, meaning the entire World Beyond story will be told over the course of just 20 episodes.

Negrete added: “So we’re really looking at these two seasons as two very different feeling chapters of hopefully a very satisfying book.

“We’re closing in right now with the writers on the last few episodes. So, we’re getting down to the wire. It’s exciting. I hope people dig it.”

The story of World Beyond has felt separate to both the main series and Fear the Walking Dead.

While characters have crossed over in the other two shows, World Beyond follows a new group of teenagers in a new location.

It isn’t known if there will be any connections to the other shows in season two, but it looks as though it will continue to be self-contained.

With both this and the main series ending, fans may be concerned The Walking Dead universe is coming to an end as a whole.

However, there is still plenty of new content to come as a Daryl (Norman Reedus) spin-off is in the works.

Likely set after season 11 of The Walking Dead, the new show will focus on the fan-favourite character, though no release date has been confirmed.

Likewise, the Rick Grimes movie does not have a release date either, despite being announced back in 2019.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond is available to watch on AMC in the USA and Amazon Prime in the UK.
