Gabriel Stokes (played by Seth Gilliam) has undergone some significant changes in the latest seasons of The Walking Dead. With new episodes coming to AMC this August, fans have been looking to the original comics for clues to how the epic zombie apocalypse series could come to an end.
A new theory has fans convinced that Gabriel Stokes will be killed in the upcoming 11th and final season of The Walking Dead.
The former priest was first introduced in the show’s fifth season, and has become a popular mainstay ever since.
However, Gabriel’s storyline in the series has drastically departed from his trajectory in Robert Kirkman’s original comic books.
Moreover, the TV adaptation has gone without its fan favourite protagonist Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) since the start of season nine.
Rick’s absence and Gabriel’s dark turn in the latest season could add up to the preacher’s inevitable demise in TWD’s final season.
One fan took to Reddit to suggest Gabriel could be about to take the place of Rick’s death in the comics.
User KaplanBeni7 posted: “In the Walking Dead comics Rick gets shot by Sebastian Milton.
“But [Rick isn’t in season 11], that means maybe someone else can get killed by him.
“In my opinion, Gabriel will be shot by him, because he’s the leader of Alexandria.”
In Kirkman’s original series, Rick is shot and killed by Sebastian Milton, the son of the Commonwealth leader, Pamela Milton.
Although Rick’s exit with the CRM left the door open for his return, it’s widely assumed he won’t be coming back until after the 11th series of the flagship series airs.
However, as the Alexandrians are soon about to encounter the Commonwealth, someone may have to take Rick’s place when they come up against Sebastian.
With Gabriel becoming the Safe-Zone’s de facto leader upon Rick’s disappearance, he could naturally assume his position in Kirkman’s final issues of the TWD comics.

Casting for Sebastian Milton has yet to be confirmed, although newcomer Jacob Young’s character ‘Deaver’ is speculated to be a misdirect so as not to spoil the surprise of his appearance.
As Pamela Milton is confirmed to be joining the series, portrayed by Laila Robins, season 11 will almost certainly cover some of the most important events from the original Commonwealth arc.
However, as the new season will be split into three parts releasing well into 2022, it may be some time before speculation is confirmed.
Alternatively, some fans think a different character has already taken Rick’s place and is doomed to die by Sebastian’s hand in the final episodes.
One commenter replied to the original post: “Gabriel will be shot by Aaron for being so reckless.
“I reckon Aaron will get [Rick’s] death because he already has Rick’s comic book look.”
Whatever happens, TWD enthusiasts seem convinced that both Gabriel and Aaron (Ross Marquand) will meet their maker in the final instalment of the worldwide zombie phenomenon.
The Walking Dead Season 11, Part 1 premieres August 15 on AMC+ and August 22 on AMC.
