Season five of The Good Doctor is officially a go at ABC. The network pleased fans on Monday by confirming the series as the first of its current television season to be picked up for another instalment, expected to premiere at the end of 2021 or start of 2022.

The gripping ordeals of brilliant doctor Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) will officially continue on ABC.

Murphy, a gifted surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, debuted in the hit series’ first season back in 2017.

Although the series has dipped in viewership with recent seasons it remains a ratings darling for ABC, pulling in 3-4 million US viewers with each episode of season four.

It currently stands as the number one show for the Monday 10pm slot, and rakes in over 12 million viewers over 35 days of multi-platform viewing.

The Good Doctor was confirmed as the first renewal for the network’s current broadcast season, which was also the case last year.

Highmore’s leading surgeon is joined by the likes of Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas), Dr. Marcus Andrews (Hill Harper) and Chairwoman Allegra Aoki (Tamlyn Tomita) at the St. Bonaventure Hospital in California.

The latest season has also developed Shaun’s romantic relationship with Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara), head of the hospital’s IT department.

Each season has attracted some divided reviews so far, but reactions from most fans were positive when the show’s fifth outing was confirmed.

One viewer was thrilled with the announcement and tweeted: “That’s because renewing was a no-brainer!”

While another fan said on Reddit: “Yayyyy! Thank you thank you thank you. I’m on such a dry and empty year of television shows and this means a lot!”

However, other viewers have been critical of the show’s portrayal of Shaun’s autism, though Highmore’s performance has been widely praised.

A third Twitter user said: “I know some people who like this show and enjoy it’s autistic representation.”

“But I am not one of them. Find it stereotyped and flawed. Wish we could have better.”

It is currently unknown when the next season will start, especially after season four’s usual September premiere was pushed back two months amid coronavirus delays.

Season four is currently keeping fans waiting for its 16th episode, with just four subsequent episodes to follow.

Despite Monday’s good news, viewers were naturally frustrated with the series’ schedule shake-up, especially after last week’s devastating cliffhanger.

One fan fumed: “Great… We have to wait two dracking weeks to find out if Leah is okay.

“Next season I’m waiting until the season is done and binge it. I’m tired of this one week on, one week off bs.”

Following another intense medical procedure, the final moments of episode 15, ‘Waiting’, shocked fans when the pregnant Lea collapsed to the floor.

A new promo for the next episode, ‘Dr. Ted’, has confirmed complications in Lea’s pregnancy that will put her relationship with Shaun to the test.

The Good Doctor season 4 continues Monday, May 10 on ABC.
