Beat the Chasers star Darragh Ennis, better known to ITV viewers as The Menace, was taking no prisoners on Monday night – as he implied host Bradley Walsh isn't a real celebrity.

The six chasers lined up for a special celebrity edition of the programme, starring actor Omid Djalili and Olympian Richard Whitehead – but Darragh wasn't above lashing out at Bradley with the celebrities in earshot.

While host Bradley introduced the show, Darragh interjected: "After working with you for so long, it’ll be nice to work with some real celebrities!"

A disgruntled Bradley cheekily told the audience at home: "That’s the only seat with an ejector button on it. You won’t be seeing him for long!"

However, Darragh later admitted the joke was "terrible", as one fan tweeted in response: "Good jab at Brad there, @bones_giles #BeatTheChasers."

Darragh replied: "Not a jab, more a terrible joke," as the fan said: "Nevertheless, I enjoyed it!"

It comes after Bradley was temporarily replaced as presenter of the regular edition of The Chase by Joe Pasquale.

And Joe also couldn't resist lashing out at Bradley's intelligence and presenting skills.

Joe kicked off the special episode of the programme by announcing: "Hello, and welcome to The Chase. I'm Bradley Walsh, TV's luckiest man. And once again, I'll be asking questions I can barely read – let alone understand."

Bradley could then be heard calling for a "Cut!" on the show as he urged security to enter the studio and reclaim his rightful place.

Two members of the audience posing as security could then be seen running on-set as the hilarious escapade continued.

It was all in good fun, however, as part of a special bloopers episode – with the real Brad overseeing things from a recording studio to comment on the show's most hilarious mess-ups.

He explained to the camera: "Yes, it's me, the real Brad. And I'm not really the director – they only let me sit in the chair if I promise not to touch anything!"

Meanwhile, Darragh himself was busy live-tweeting the Beat the Chasers episode at home, and explained how the studio sticks to Covid-19 rules while appearing seamless and mask-less – as the series was filmed before new restrictions came into place.

He explained to one fan: "It's done very tightly according to all restrictions. There is cleverly disguised social distancing and social bubbles in the audience."
