Since The Blacklist first premiered on NBC in 2013, fans have been trying to uncover the real identity of the mysterious Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington (played by James Spader). With viewers three episodes into season nine, fans are convinced Katarina Rostova (Lotte Verbeek) could potentially be disguised as Red.
Taking to Reddit, user TheShawnRod revealed they had “fallen between two possibilities” when it came to Red’s identity.
The fan wrote: “The first is the obvious, The Blacklist heavily hinted in the finale that Red was Katarina; however, the other possibility is in true Blacklist fashion that the obvious is too easy.”
“They have led us to believe Red is Katarina, but we will be shocked to find the true answer,” the user added.
While admitting it could be another “Blacklist curveball,” the fan explained: “The difficult thing for me to believe that Red is not Katarina is the constant evidence over seasons i.e. the Red to Kirk whisper ‘I am Katerina.’”
The user concluded: “As much as I wish Red was not Katarina it is becoming seemingly difficult to believe otherwise.”
Red’s real identity is a common mystery amongst fans who have waited eight years to find out he could be.
In season one Red was a wanted fugitive and made his first appearance mysteriously as he surrendered and wanted to help the FBI capture deadly criminals.
However, he had one condition, he would only speak if he could work with rookie Liz Keen (Megan Boone), which even confused her as they had never met before.
Despite the initial weirdness, the two got to work and eventually became very close friends as the series progressed.
Viewers got more of an insight into Liz’s upbringing in season eight, which made fans question Red’s identity even more.
Throughout the series, fans were given a glimpse into her traumatic childhood during flashback scenes from her memories, which often featured a fire.
Season eight pieced the clues together when it was revealed Liz had shot and killed her father, the original Raymond Reddington after a fight broke out with her mother Katarina who had arrived to pick her up.
After Liz and Katarina ran away, she was later forced to spend the rest of her childhood with her adopted father Sam Scott (William Sadler).
As people were unaware of Red’s death, fans believed Katarina became Red which would explain his initial insistence to only work with Liz.
Especially after it was also revealed Katarina and Ilya Koslov (Brett Cullen) created Red to protect Liz.
As Katarina wasn’t able to be there for Liz as she went on the run from multiple governments, her becoming Red to be close to her daughter during her adult years appears to be a possibility.
Other viewers took to the comments of the Reddit theory to share their opinion, including RudeObjetive2360, who disagreed.
The user wrote: “I definitely think that the Redarena thing is a red herring, it was too heavily implied in season eight to be true.
They explained: “The writers do this all the time to us, throw us a curveball so that we focus on what seems to be true when there is something going on behind the scenes.”
Others are also convinced Katarina will make an appearance in season nine, especially after Liz’s jaw-dropping murder in the season eight finale.
The Blacklist season nine continues Thursdays on NBC.
