Fans have loved the Spider-Man films for years even before Tom Holland played the beloved superhero. But when Spider-Man entered the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans rejoiced with happiness. Sony and Marvel coming together allowed Holland to bring even more depth to the hero as he developed relationships with the Avengers — and it also allowed the heroes from the Avengers to have parts in the Spider-Man films. Unfortunately, it seems it’s the end of an era. Sony and Marvel have decided to part ways.
So, now that Spider-Man is officially out of the MCU, what’s next? It seems there may be TV shows in the works. Here’s what’s been reported.
Financial disagreements led to Spider-Man getting kicked out of the MCU
As for why Spider-Man has been booted from the MCU, it seems it all revolves around money. Sony owned Spider-Man before Marvel or Disney (the parent company of Marvel Studios) ever became involved. The president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, agreed years ago to help Sony produce their Spider-Man films, which is how the two companies initially got together over the superhero.
Unfortunately, it seems the success of Spider-Man: Far From Home may have Marvel/Disney wanting a bigger cut of the Sony paycheck. Sony doesn’t want to budge on their current deal, however, putting the companies at a standstill. For that reason, Spider-Man is separating from the other MCU heroes, as the two companies won’t be working on the films together anymore.
Sony says there’s little potential at the moment for a reconciliation
Fans would absolutely love for Sony and Marvel to work out their differences, and even some of the MCU actors, like Jeremy Renner, are hoping for a reconciliation. And if the two companies do want to strike a new deal, it seems they have some time. We Got This Covered reported that Disney has until mid-2020 to make a deal before Sony goes ahead with plans for another Spider-Man film without the MCU characters.
Unfortunately, it seems Sony thinks an agreement is less likely to happen. As Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra said at the Variety Entertainment and Technology Summit, “We had a great run with (Feige) on Spider-Man movies.” He also added that “the Marvel people are terrific people, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand we have some pretty terrific people of our own. Kevin didn’t do all the work.”
This seems like a final decision according to Vinciquerra — and Sony’s already working on new material for Spider-Man. “Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well,” Vinciquerra added.
Sony’s new plan with Spider-Man includes TV shows
So, what are Sony’s big plans for Spider-Man moving forward? It seems the company’s extra hopeful that their own Spider-Man universe films will do well considering the huge success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. They currently have a second Venom movie in the works and a new film based off of Morbius the Living Vampire. Not only that, but fans can expect some Spider-Man-based TV shows, too. Variety notes Sony is working on “five or six” different series set in the universe.
Director, filmmaker, and actor Jon Favreau, who’s worked on the Marvel films, remains optimistic despite Vinciquerra’s readiness for Spider-Man to step away from the MCU for good. “I think it’s a long way away and I think the collaboration has been really strong up to this point so I’m hopeful that there’s a way for us all to play together going forward,” Favreau said at the summit.
Even if Spider-Man doesn’t rejoin the MCU, it looks like we’ll be getting plenty of new content going forward with the beloved hero. And it sounds like Tom Holland is ready to continue playing the character as well, which is good news!
