Sister Act cast now – tragic deaths, gruelling cancer battle and Hollywood stint

Sister Act has quickly become a cultural classic since it first hit the silver screen nearly 30 years ago as it took a comical look at life inside a convent.

Despite the previous reputation of life as a nun, Whoopi Goldberg shared a different spin on the lifestyle as she portrayed the role of Deloris Van Cartier on the blockbuster movie in 1992.

But the Ghost star wasn’t the only big name to join the star-studded cast, as Dame Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena snapped up the chance to join the film which broke down many of the stigmas surrounding the religious practice.

The Hollywood classic was such a hit with viewers it went on to become a West End production and even led to a sequel which dropped the following year titled Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.

Now, the actress revealed has revealed she loved being a part of the close-knit Sister Act family so much that she pushed for another sequel which she recently confirmed is in the works.

But where are the beloved cast of Sister Act now? Daily Star has taken a deep dive into the careers of the talented cast as some of them prepare to reunite once more.

Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi starred in the lead role as Deloris and her witness protection alter ego, Sister Mary Clarence in the hit Hollywood film.

But after the film’s release, the Oscar award winner went on to feature in 1994 animated version of Disney’s The Lion King in the role of Shenzi the Hyeena, while also appearing on Broadway.

The 65-year-old has also tested her skills as a producer, writer and director on TV shows including Whoopi, Strong Medicine and more than 10 episodes of The View.

The New York native is one of the few celebrities to earn an EGOT –receive an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award – for her legendary acting abilities on and off screen.

Outside of work, the A-lister went on to welcome her daughter, Alex Martin, now 48, who she shares with her ex-husband, Alvin Martin.

Dame Maggie Smith

Following on from her days in the black and white gown, the 86-year-old actress went on to famously star in the Harry Potter franchise as Professor McGonagall as well as the beloved Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham on Downton Abbey for six seasons.

While she was filming for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dame Maggie Smith was fighting breast cancer after being diagnosed at age 73, with the actress undergoing chemo and radiation.

Now 86, Maggie has continued to work as an actress, with the star set to reprise her role as the Dowager Countess of Grantham for the upcoming Downton Abbey film set to be released in March 2022.

Maggie has also performed in numerous stage plays including The Lady in the Van and A German Life which received rave reviews online, but stepped back from the gig after her diagnosis which left her too tired to take part in long plays.

The Oscar winner is also a mother to her two sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin who she shares with her ex-husband Robert Stephens.

Kathy Najimy

After Sister Act became a huge hit, Kathy Najimy – who portrayed Sister Mary Patrick in the Hollywood film – went on to star in the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Bette Midler.

The actress also turned her hand to voice acting throughout her successful career when she voiced multiple characters on Pepper Ann before.

The 64-year-old didn’t just flourish as an actress on screen, as she found her feet in theatre too where she is known for starring in Broadway’s Dirty Blonde.

The talented actress also went on to co-create the off-Broadway hit Back to Bacharach and David as well as direct and co-write the musical These Girls.

In her down time, the Hollywood actress enjoys a quiet life with her husband and comedian Dan Finnerty, who she wed in 1998, before they welcomed their daughter Samia.

Wendy Makkena

Wendy Makkena played the youngest nun in the convent, Sister Mary Robert in the Sister Act series.

After her impressive success in the movie, Wendy went on to star in A League of Their Own, Judging Amy, Oliver Beene, Listen Up and The Mob Doctor.

The starlet also made several guest appearances on several TV shows including NCIS, Numb3rs and Rizzoli & Isles to name a few.

Stepping away from TV, the 63-year-old has recently appeared in a slew of Hollywood films such as Air Bud, Finding North, Wanderland, The Tomorrow Man and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

In her personal life, the starlet married film producer Bob Krakower in 1997 before they welcomed their beautiful daughter Ruby.

It is thought that the star will return to reprise her role in the hit Hollywood film alongside her A-list co-stars.

Mary Wickes

Mary Wickes played the role of Sister Mary Lazarus in Sister Act who was one of the older nuns in the convent who thinks she is a great driver but is actually very horrible to the other nuns in the musical film.

The actress later reprised her role for the sequel before she went on the play the role of Aunt March in Little Women in 1994.

After her role in Weldon Pond she went on to voice the character Laverne in Disney’s animated version in the Hunchback of Nortre Dame and voiced the grandma on the TV series Life With Louie for two seasons.

The White Christmas actress sadly died on October 22 1995 at the age of 85 after a long and decorated career on the silver screen.

Harvey Keitel

Oscar nominee Harvey Keitel portrayed the role of mob boss Vince LaRocca who was the disgruntled ex-boyfriend of Deloris.

The star later went on to star in blockbuster films such as Pulp Fiction, Smoke, From Dusk Till Dawn, One Last Chance, Little Fockers, The Last Godfather and most recently The Irishman on Netflix.

But he wasn’t just a star in front of the camera, as he later went on to produce multiple films, including the now infamous Reservoir Dogs and Cuban Blood.

Away from work, the actor is a proud father to three children, daughter Stella and sons Hudson and Roman, who he shares with three different women.

Now, the New York native has settled down with the love of his life, Daphna Kastner who he married in 2001 and shares his youngest child with.

Bill Nunn

Award-winning actor Bill Nunn played the role of cop Eddie Souther, whose job it was to keep Deloris safe from her abusive ex-partner until she needed to testify against Vince.

His acting career continued to take off after the success of the film, as the Pennsylvania native went on to star in Save Me, Bulletproof, Ambushed, Lockdown, Firehouse Dog and Won’t Back Down.

One of his biggest roles since the film premiered was when he was cast as Joseph ‘Robbie’ Robertson in the 2002 trilogy of Spiderman.

Unfortunately, the incredible actor is another star from the original Sister Act cast who sadly died too soon on September 24, 2016 at the age of 62.

The film star left behind his loving wife Donna Nunn and their two children Cydney and Jessica.

Richard Portnow

Richard Portnow, who played the role of one of Vince’s thugs names Willy – tasked with locating and killing Deloris before the court date – has also seen success after his time on the set.

The actor went on to star in Night Eyes Three, Man of the House, Mad City, Desert Thunder, The Mystery of Spoon River, Killer by Nature, Hitchcock, Café Society, Duke and Roe v. Wade.

Portnow also appeared in a selection of TV shows including Home Free, EZ Streets and The Sopranos.
