Netflix’s hit royal drama The Crown is currently filming for its fifth series. The fourth series, which launched on the streaming service in November last year, told the story of Prince Charles and Diana’s early romance. However, the upcoming instalment is set to focus on their relationship breakdown and the later stages of Diana’s life. Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki was recently spotted donning a replica of Diana’s 1994 “revenge dress” while filming the series.

Princess Diana was well known for setting trends with her fashion, but one of her most famous looks was widely interpreted as a form of vengeance.

Back in 1994, Diana broke royal protocol by stepping out in a revealing off-the-shoulder dress as her husband Prince Charles admitted to being unfaithful.

As a result, the outfit she wore for her arrival at a glitzy London event became known as her “revenge dress”.

The iconic look has now been recreated by actress Elizabeth, who is playing the late royal in the upcoming series of The Crown.

New images show the actress as Diana getting out of her car to attend the 1994 Vanity Fair dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in London.

Elizabeth was wearing a replica of the £900 Christina Stambolian silk crepe cocktail dress with side sash.

She also donned a copy of the sapphire, diamond, and pearl necklace that the royal wore that night.

The star’s hair and make-up was styled just like Diana’s as she filmed scenes for the Netflix drama.

Elizabeth was photographed filming the scenes on Monday at the gallery in Hyde Park, not far from Kensington Palace.

The actress took over the role from Emma Corrin, who played a young Diana in the previous series of The Crown.

Diana had originally bought the now-famous dress in 1991, but reportedly considered it too daring to wear at the time.

She wore the outfit on the same evening that Charles admitted in a TV documentary interview with Jonathan Dimbleby that he was having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, who is now his wife.

The upcoming series of The Crown is also set to air an entire episode focusing on Diana’s controversial interview with Martin Bashir in 1995.

However, some royal experts have recently hit out at the Netflix series for choosing to cover the interview in the series.

In a recent appearance on This Morning, commentator Gyles Brandreth made it clear he didn’t want to see more dramatisations of Diana’s life.

He fumed: “Please just give it a break for a while. I don’t know that I want any more of this.”

Gyles went on to highlight that The Crown’s coverage of Princess Diana’s interview with Martin Bashir could be upsetting for the royal family.

“I know for example that Prince William, who really was just distressed by the whole revealing of the Bashir story, also feels we have perhaps had enough now,” Gyles claimed.

The Crown Season 5 is expected to premiere on Netflix in November 2022.
