Joey Essex was the first celebrity to declare an injury while preparing for the big Dancing on Ice launch on ITV early next year. The reality TV star shared an image of the painful-looking damage of his middle finger and warned his fellow skaters of the dangers of the competition.

The Only Way is Essex star posed for a couple of photos with his heavily bandaged finger to his 1.8 million followers on Instagram on Friday.

He captioned his eye-watering photo: “Respect the ice, otherwise the ice will not respect you… Day two.”

Joey revealed more in his Instagram stories, adding: “I’ve ended up with a metal finger, I’m lucky to still have the finger to be honest.

“You live and learn. If you are ever going to be a dancer on the ice, don’t take risks straight away.

In a potential word of warning to his fellow contestants he added: “Go slow. It’s all about patience.”

Fans flooded his post with concern and support of the popular celebrity.

Jojo commented: “Nobody is born cool Joe, except of course… an ice cube. Go on Joey and freeze the day.”

Claire added: “Keep going but trying keeping all your fingers joey.”

Donna wrote: “Only watching because your in it joey to win win win xx.”

Some fans even speculated about the star’s future in the ITV competition.

Sian panicked: “Please say you’re still doing the show though?!” and Alicia wrote: “Don’t let it stop you from getting back on the Ice!”

Joey has not confirmed the extent of the injury, but with a metal plate and huge bandaging. He will certainly be off the ice for a while.

The star was announced as a contestant on Dancing on Ice, during an appearance on This Morning on Friday, October 7.

Chatting to Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond, he shared his inspiration to join the competition.

He told the presenters: “I would love to win. I’m going to put all my energy into this… This stage in my life, I’m so ready for something like this.”

“I’m doing it for me, I want to impress the judges but I want to impress myself. I’m going to put all my effort into it.”

He added: “I’m just ready for the commitment, it’s not an easy thing to do.”

Joey will join fellow celebrities including John Fashanu, Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu and Patsy Palmer in looking to be crowned the champion of the ice.

Patsy was also announced as a contestant on This Morning and told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield how the opportunity arose.

The EastEnders legend revealed: “I obviously didn’t call them up and say, ‘Can I take part?’ but of all the things that came through, this is the one I really had to think about.”

She added: “This is for all the 50-year-olds out there who are afraid to challenge themselves.”

Dancing On Ice will return to ITV in 2023.
