Boris Johnson sparked outrage last week after admitting to attending a drinks gathering in the garden of Downing Street in May 2020 while a coronavirus lockdown was in place. Speaking about the Prime Minister with Dr Hilary on her ITV chat show, Lorraine Kelly explained members of the public shouldn’t be following what the Government is doing regarding the COVID-19 guidelines.

“Now, what we have to do is not follow the Government in this,” the host began. “And the way they conduct themselves.

“People have been talking about the culture of No.10 and trying to stop this party culture.

“And that absolutely comes from the top, doesn’t it?

“I don’t know about you, but I can’t imagine Theresa May, ‘Go and get a suitcase full of booze and we’ll all go and have a great time’.”

Dr Hilary replied: “My take on this is that they were in a bunker mentality.

“They thought they were in a bubble, they can really do what they like.

“However, there were people who could not attend funerals of their loved ones.

“They couldn’t visit people in hospital, they couldn’t meet up with family who they desperately wanted to meet up with.”

The GP continued: “So unless you lead by example from the top and do exactly what you tell other people to do, you’re going to get massively criticised.”

“And he sets the tone,” Lorraine chipped in as she referred to the Prime Minister.

“That is the whole point, he sets the tone. In some ways, it would be easier for them to let us know when they didn’t have a party.”

“Sure,” Dr Hilary agreed before Lorraine added: “Because there is so many of them.”

The conversation quickly shifted as Lorraine asked the doctor whether he thinks restrictions will ease any time soon.

“They’re talking about that,” the GP explained. “Of course, the opposition are saying that it’s just a way of becoming more popular after party gate.

“And that it is too much too soon. They say they’ll be following the science again.

“I think there will be a reduction of some restrictions, but I think to abandon them all would be a mistake.”

He went on to point out that because the R-rate is higher than one, the pandemic is, “still growing”.

“I think to abandon Covid passes would be a mistake at mass events,” the TV doctor warned.

“That would be a super spreader event still, even though a lot of people are protected now.

“I think it has got to be done cautiously, using the data we have.”

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
