This Is Us has always been well represented by Emmy nominations. Sterling K. Brown has already won twice, and so have guest stars Ron Cephas Jones and Gerald McRaney. The Emmy voters finally caught on to the work Mandy Moore is doing on NBC’s family drama. Moore has her first nomination for This Is Us’s third season.
Midway through the third season, Showbiz Cheat Sheet was on the set of This Is Us on the 20th Century Fox studio lot. Moore spoke about some of the season’s storylines which would ultimately earn her an Emmy. This Is Us returns Tuesday, September 24 at 9 p.m. on NBC.
Mandy Moore learned her ‘This Is Us’ brother in law was still alive
This Is Us told the full story of Uncle Nicky (Michael Angarano) in Vietnam. The bombshell was that Nicky is still alive. The Big Three went to visit Nicky (Griffin Dunne) while Rebecca (Moore) tried to process it all.
“I understand her hesitation [to meet Nicky],” Moore said. “I think Rebecca is a very thoughtful person and she needs time to sort of marinate in something. She’s not one that’s just going to spontaneously jump into a situation.”
Rebecca may have thought losing Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) was the most shocking thing that could happen to her. Now she had to contend with this news, and Moore delivered. Emmy voters clearly agreed.
“That’s really throwing someone for a loop,” Moore said. “If you’ve just believed something that the love of your life told you for the entirety of your relationship and time together, and all of a sudden you find out that he was lying and keeping a secret, I, as a human being, would probably want to take a step back and let me just digest this Earth shattering information.”
Mandy Moore took the leap with Jon Huertas on ‘This Is Us’
This Is Us fans were shocked when present day Rebecca showed up married to Miguel (Jon Huertas). Season 3 showed how that romance began, and it was Rebecca taking the first step.
“I was always bummed out that people didn’t initially support that,” Moore said. “It’s not fair to assume that she should live our her life lonely, especially once her kids are grown up. I love that she took the initiative and I’m glad that she took the initiative to have another relationship.”
The complexity of a second romance must have made an impression on Emmy voters too.
“She deserves to find some joy in her life, although I think as she gets older, there’s just an embedded sadness in her that never really goes away,” Moore said. “It’s always just right under the surface.”
Miguel was the only man she would even consider
Miguel was Jack’s best friend, so he was part of the family when Rebecca was married to him. Moore thinks that’s the only reason she would even consider a second marriage.
“I think their relationship is rooted in something else,” Moore said. “I think they both sort of needed each other at that point in their life. There was this understanding. There was this commonality, the shared history and familiarity with them. I’m not sure Rebecca would have necessarily gotten married again had it not been for Miguel.”
