The television presenter is set to appear on Boxing Day’s All Star Musicals on ITV, which will see a group of famous faces taking on a musical ballad. Fern Britton recently spoke to the Loose Women panel, where she confessed the experience was “really hard”. She talked about the pressure in following in her late father’s career and the anxiety it caused her.

The 64-year-old appeared on the ITV chat show, in which she was asked about taking on a musical piece after her actor and theatre star father, Tony Britton.

Tony died in 2019, and Fern admitted the task was slightly overwhelming.

“Well yes, you know my father was a very big star in the West End,” she explained.

She added: “Particularly in musicals but also you know drama, comedy on television, ‘Don’t Wait Up’, ‘Robin’s Nest’.

“And so I thought, well I mean perhaps there is something in the genes that means I can do something in a musical.

“The answer is no.”

A clip shown on Loose Women showed Fern rehearsing the song, admitting she was “feeling a slight anxiety” about the big day.

She told the panel that her main mentor was musical star Samatha Barks, who was also in the movie adaptation of Les Misérables.

“She was really so encouraging and very warm,” Fern explained.

“I mean her talent is huge, and then one day in rehearsal trying to dance and sing at the same time, I’m giving it as much as I could and in the corner of my eye I saw Elaine Paige OBE.”

Fern continued: “At the end of it she called me over and she gave me some really good notes, not all of which were positive!”

The former This Morning star has spoken candidly about her split from late husband Phil Vickery.

The 63-year-old talked about the “tough time” she has faced since the end of the 20-year marriage, which ended last year.

“I’ve had a bad two or three years,” she shared.

“Both of my parents died, my beloved cat died and, unfortunately, my marriage died.

“It was a bit of a tough time but we are getting through. And it is all OK.”

Speaking to The Mirror, she continued: “I’ve got a couple of very good girlfriends and they just make me laugh all the time.

“I could not face unpacking it all. They came round a while ago to help me clear my garage. Now that’s a friend isn’t it?”

Fern and Phil first met while hosting Ready Steady Cook together in 1999. They got married a year later.

Loose Women airs weekdays on ITV from 12.30pm.
