Morning Live presenter Gethin Jones welcomed BBC Breakfast star Dan Walker onto the programme on Wednesday to discuss his journey so far on Strictly Come Dancing. Dan was joined on the show by his professional dance partner Nadiya Bychkova. The pair chatted about their time on the BBC dance contest so far, however Dan confessed he’s still struggling to recover from a comment head judge Shirley Ballas made about him early on in the competition.
Gethin began: “Dan you are looking the part. We’ve had so many messages for you this morning.
“Maria is saying that you are going from strength to strength. Everyone’s saying you are improving.
“Did you ever think someone would say you have an amazing vertical line?” Gethin asked, referencing a comment Shirley made on Strictly.
Dan replied: “I’m still recovering from Shirley saying I have one of the longest necks.”
The studio erupted with laughter as Dan pulled down his t-shirt to show off his lengthy neck.
“It’s the best neck, the best neck!” Nadiya exclaimed.
Shirley made the comment in week one of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, after seeing Dan perform for the first time.
She said: “You have the height and I’ve never seen a neck that long in all my life, which is a huge asset when you’re a dancer!”
Moving on to chat more about Dan’s journey in the competition, Gethin said: “You’ve done so well Dan.
“But, the judges seem to believe that you need to show more of yourself. Do you agree with that?” he asked.
“Yeah, I do. I understand what they say,” Dan conceded.
He explained why he finds elements of Strictly challenging: “This is all very alien to me.
“In normal life I’m quite a confident person, but when I step on the dance floor it’s like years of being too tall and too awkward and it is quite exposing for me to sort of get out there and try and show my confidence.
“But, Nadiya was really helping,” the BBC Breakfast presenter revealed.
Turning to his dance partner Dan said: “I think you’ve seen a difference. It’s just not my natural environment.”
Nadiya made it clear she’s seen big improvements in Dan throughout his time in the competition.
She commented: “I’m with him every day so I can see a huge difference and we’re getting there.
“The confidence is growing, he’s starting to believe in himself, and I think every week he gets better and better and quicker,” she said.
“Hopefully this week you’re going to see even more of him!” Nadiya exclaimed.
Strictly fans will see the dance duo perform a Jive on Saturday night’s show to Rock Lobster by The B-52’s.
