Coronation Street have confirmed a dark historical abuse storyline for Gemma Winter’s (Dolly-Rose Campbell) twin brother Paul Foreman (Peter Ash). Soon Gemma and Paul’s stepdad Kel will be back in their lives which will begin this storyline as Gemma discovers that Paul was sexually abused as a child by Kel.
When Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) takes Gemma shopping for maternity clothes, Chesney (Sam Aston) wonders where she’s found the money. His suspicions are confirmed when he uncovers the positive pregnancy test scam. Furious Gemma turns her anger on Bernie and tells her to go. But as Bernie tries to leave the shop, the alarm goes off.
As Bernie’s accused of shoplifting she’s taken aback to discover the security guard is her old flame, Kel. After talking him round a bickering Gemma and Bernie return home to a knock at the door, Bernie’s invited Kel for tea to say thanks.
It’ll transpire that young Paul was groomed into thinking he was in a consensual relationship with Kel. It takes Paul’s partner Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) to point out that he was a young child so was being sexually abused by Kel.
Peter Ash recently said of the story: ‘I have known about this storyline for some time so have had the opportunity to speak to Duncan Craig at Survivors Manchester in advance of filming which has been great. His experience was really similar to Paul’s so it was invaluable for me to be able to talk about all the conflicting emotions and not accepting or realising it was abuse until later on in life.’ Read more here
Coronation Street producers and writers are working closely with Survivors Manchester for this storyline and hope that it will encourage people who have suffered in silence to speak out.
Paul’s abuse will certainly have an effect on Gemma and Bernie but will they both believe him when he finally finds the courage to speak out?
