Coronation Street star Matilda Freeman comes out as bisexual a year after quitting soap as Summer Spellman

CORONATION Street star Matilda Freeman has been praised by fans after she came out as bisexual.

The actress, 17, took part in an Instagram 'ask me anything' Q&A on her Story when she was asked about her sexuality.

The teen, who played Summer Spellman on the soap until last year, simply replied "I'm bisexual," alongside a love heart emoji.

After sharing the post, Matilda was inundated with messages of support from her followers praising her for being so open.

The soap star said the outpouring support "means the world" to her in a follow-up post.

Matilda said: "Can I just say – thank you for all the love and support I've received after making my sexuality aware on my socials.

"I really wasn't expecting it and it means the absolute world, you guys are amazing. I love you all."

Her announcement comes at the beginning of Pride month, which celebrates the LGBTQ+ community throughout June.

The teenager last appeared on the Cobbles last August after three years on the soap.

Explaining her exit from the long-running soap, Matilda said that she'd left so she could "work on other shows/films/projects".

She said in another Instagram Story: "When you work at Corrie you're under a contract which means you can't work on anything else while you’re there – so it was quite limiting."

In October, the soap announced that they had recast Matilda's role and Summer would now be played by new actress Harriet Bibby.

The actress featured in several gripping storylines while on the soap, including Todd Grimshaw's initial exit and Billy Mayhew's drug addiction.

The schoolgirl has not been seen for a while on screen despite the return of her legal guardian Todd at the time.

Harriet was cast in the role after Matilda decided to leave Coronation Street in August to explore new opportunities.

The newcomer has previously starred in an episode of Doctors and a series of local stage plays prior to landing her cobbles role.

Outgoing Summer, Matilda said: "I’d like to say thank you to my second family, the cast, crew and viewers who have supported me during my time on the cobbles.

"After three and a half lovely years I felt it was time for a change and I’m excited to be starting that next chapter with a new role."
