Craig (played by Colson Smith) has been taking a back seat on Coronation Street of late as he gets to grip with his role as a police officer. The youngster has also been offering some comfort to Faye (Ellie Leach) after she was sexually assaulted by Ray Crosby (Mark Frost) which subsequently led her to attack Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) in a case of mistaken identity. Thursday’s edition of the ITV soap saw the teenager discover her fate but with the actor who plays Craig, Colson, 22, suggesting he will be taking a break from the show, could he find himself implicated in the case?

The episode began with Faye and her father Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) mulling over her chances of freedom.

Craig arrived to offer his support to his terrified girlfriend, asking her: “How are you feeling?”

“Scared. Really scared,” she replied before her father remarked: “Oh come on, love. We’ve been through this. There’s nothing to be frightened of.”

“You’re just entering a plea,” the police officer reminded her but she asked him: “What if they sentence me and keep me in?

“They can’t do that, can they?” she continued before her boyfriend added: “I think it’s unlikely you will be sentenced today.

“Your lawyers will be speaking to the probation team about that now,” he assured her but she wasn’t convinced.

Faye declared: “I’m pleading guilty. They might just lock me up straight away. You see things like this happen in the news all the time.”

“You’ll be fine. Don’t worry,” Craig replied, telling her he was going with her to court as a strong pillar of support.

“Yeah, of course, I just need to pop to work first,” he ominously told her, suggesting he might have a plan up his sleeve to stop her from getting a larger sentence.

The police officer added: “And I’ve got some potentially good news. Ray has been charged with sexual assault.”

I just want to make everything alright

“What does that mean, exactly?” Tim asked him, to which Craig said: “Basically, if he pleads guilty, it will be a great mitigation for you and you could be looking at a big reduction to your sentence.”

Therefore it didn’t seem the police officer needed to interfere with his girlfriend’s case to lower her sentence.

Unfortunately, by the end of the episode, it transpired Faye’s boyfriend didn’t turn up to court as he was busy with work.

The youngster was cold with her partner when he arrived at Speed Daal and he told her: “Again, I’m sorry I couldn’t be there.”

“It’s done now. Do you know what? I’m really tired, I’m going to head back,” Faye said as she got up and left.

Discussing his girlfriend’s dismayed reaction to his arrival, Craig asked Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) and Abi Franklin (Sally Carman) if he’d done anything wrong.

“Should I go after her?” the police officer asked and when it seemed that was the wrong idea, he told the two women: “She seems angry at me. I just want to make everything alright.”

Unfortunately, this could lead him to make a criminal error as he tries to wipe his girlfriend’s case from the system.

This would offer some relief to Faye, knowing she was going to be living a free life and not end up behind bars.

However, the authorities could catch Craig in the act if he fails to cover his tracks and therefore, he would be the one in jail.

With a lengthy sentence bestowed on him for his crimes, this could set up the perfect exit for the beloved character.

Speaking about taking a break from his role, Colson said he wants to go and help his sister set up a farm.

The actor explained: “April is lambing season and I’ve got the call up – I’m in for lambing season.

“I’m off work for the whole of April, so I’m going to be there lambing. It’s going to be great,” he said on the Sofa Cinema Club podcast.

Colson has already had a taste of farming life and can even drive a tractor around the rural setting.

However, if the soap star decides to take a new venture with life, could viewers be seeing the back of his character for good?

Coronation Street continues Friday at 7:30pm on ITV.
