Coronation Street favourite Rita Sullivan (played by Barbara Knox) has been a fan favourite on the ITV soap since 1964. She was only in the soap for one episode, before she returned six years later in January 1972 as the wife of Harry Bates (William Simons). Fans will often see Rita in the newsagents, The Kabin, which the soap icon once owned. Despite passing on the reins to someone else, Rita still works in the shop as an assistant.
Before Rita’s best pal Norris (Malcolm Hebden) died, he sold The Kabin to Brian Packham (Peter Gunn) and Cathy Matthews (Melanie Hill).
However, in upcoming scenes in the ITV soap, Rita’s beloved job could be at risk after Shona Platt (Julia Goulding) gets a part-time position there to help her.
Although, when Brian and Cathy announce they are going on holiday, Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews) urges them to book some cover to help Rita.
The duo are convinced Rita won’t cope on her own and reveal shopkeeper Shona will be helping while they are away in Cornwall.
As Rita talks Shona through her duties, Shona assures her she won’t let her down and she is taking the job seriously.
Although things take a turn for the worst when Shona takes a delivery of new stock from Gordon (Rowe David McClelland), a regular supplier.
However, Shona rudely tells Gordon she can’t take any more of his boring stories and asks him to leave.
Little does she know that the supplier is actually a very good friend of Rita’s.
Jenny later goes on to warn Shona that Gordon and Rita are best friends and she could have ruined their friendship.
Shona may have burned a bridge for Rita if she has lost one of the shop’s most loyal suppliers.
Will they both end up getting the sack as a result of Shona’s actions?
And even worse, will Rita end up leaving the Cobbles when she realises she has nothing left?
Fans have been left concerned about Rita’s future on the soap after her best pal, Norris was killed off, despite the actress not announcing any plans to leave.
The actor who plays Norris decided to leave the ITV soap earlier this year due to his health.
The 81-year-old actor decided to completely step away from acting and retire from the profession.
The decision came after Malcolm suffered a near-fatal heart attack despite having no symptoms.
Shona has also taken a backseat on the soap lately, although she did cause a stir with viewers at Christmas after they spotted a glaring error.
During the festive episodes, Shona was seen helping her husband David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) prepare the Christmas dinner for them and the Barlows.
However, some viewers noticed the actress who plays Shona wearing her ITV lanyard underneath her coat.
The moment came during the lead up to Christmas when Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) tried to hold talks between the warring clans.
Coronation Street airs on Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.
