Frank Reagan (played by Tom Selleck) and the rest of the Reagan clan are currently missing from the CBS schedule as the crime series endures its annual winter hiatus. However, with Blue Bloods now in its 13th season, a number of the fandom have expressed their disdain for what they feel to be a missed opportunity when it comes to the festive period.

With Blue Bloods not airing again until January 6 on CBS, fans have been taking to the web in the meantime.

And it seems plenty aren’t best pleased that Frank, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), Erin (Bridget Moynahan) and the rest of the family won’t be sitting down for Christmas dinner as part of a festive special.

It’s a regular occurrence for the Reagans to miss out on celebrating the holiday season each year but now fans feel season 13 would’ve been ideal.

The calls come following a handful of other major US TV dramas airing their own Christmas special in recent years, including NBC’s Law and Order franchise.

Taking to Reddit, u/TakenAccountName37 was the first to take aim at Blue Bloods bosses as they fumed: “It is disappointing that we do not get them often.

“It’s not just this show but many on tv today. Blue Bloods is a family-oriented show. It would make sense to have something Christmas-related especially to take us away from the darkness in each episode.

“I have to applaud SVU for having one. Why couldn’t Blue Bloods?” the Redditor queried.

And it didn’t take long for several members of the fandom to weigh in with their own responses, with many echoing the desire for a festive episode.

Fellow fan u/Conscious-Coffee5431 commented: “For the current season, my guess is that we didn’t get a Christmas episode because they couldn’t schedule the actors who play the other grandchildren. It would seem odd if there was a Christmas episode and they were missing.”

While u/Reggie_Barclay suggested: “They need better showrunners. The writing is also going downhill because of a lack of creative supervision.”

Which was backed up by u/Save-therhino-: “This I agree with. This show is no where near what it was in the beginning of series. This season is bland at best.”

Elsewhere, u/Putin*****Goats suggested another possiblereason: “Just a guess, but maybe it has something to do with syndication. Networks might not want to air a Christmas re-run in July.”

While u/Sledge313 defended the decision: “Most shows now dont do holiday episodes. If they dont do them then they can make the years do whatever in the series.

“Ex: The Rookie first 3 seasons took place in a 12 month timespan for the characters. Holidays date the seasons, so they have gone away from them.” (Sic)

Instead of a holiday special, fans last got to see Frank and the family on-screen on December 9.

CBS has released a short synopsis of what fans can expect when Blue Bloods does return on January 6 with episode Nothing Sacred.

It reads [via IMDb]: “Family tensions run high when Frank and his grandson, Joe Hill (Will Hochman), contend with a grievous insult to the memory of Joe’s father.

“Erin and Henry (Len Cariou) work together to bust an over-the-phone scammer targeting the elderly.

“Danny intervenes in an undercover assignment led by his spiralling former partner and Eddie’s (Vanessa Ray) captain takes a suspicious interest in her efforts to locate a stolen puppy.”

Blue Bloods season 13 returns on January 6 on CBS in the USA. A UK release date remains to be seen.
