The quest for Avengers Endgame to become the highest-grossing movie of all time continues as the re-release has helped the Marvel epic edge closer and closer to Avatar’s record. This past weekend the re-release, which included a few minutes of bonus content, opened internationally. And now Avengers Endgame is just $15.5 million away from Avatar’s $2,787,965,087 worldwide box office total. However, it’s still an uphill climb despite how little left is needed for Avengers Endgame to become the biggest movie of all time.
Sure, this last weekend the Avengers Endgame re-release had a boost of $3 million domestically, but that was around half of the weekend before.
Internationally, there was traction made too with $2.6 million overseas.
However, as the weeks go on, the takings will only get lower and lower as new films come out and fans prioritise re-watching Spider-Man Far From Home – even if Avengers Endgame’s re-release was given a push by it.
Meanwhile, CinemaBlend points out that the US home release of Avengers Endgame’s digital download goes live at the end of July.
While the Blu-ray and other physical formats arrive in mid-August.
Will fans still be going to see Avengers Endgame then? Some maybe, but $15.5 million is a long way off.
It looks like Avengers Endgame’s best bet is to re-release cinematically in a year as a double bill with Avengers Infinity War.
This would give fans a rare chance to see the two-part epic back-to-back on the big screen once again.
This would be especially attractive to fans considering both movies were shot entirely on IMAX cameras.
And that format, i.e. around 26% of the entire picture, is not available on home release.
Anyway, the money left to beat Avatar is made up from its re-release which came a year later too, so no doubt Marvel will take a leaf out of James Cameron’s book.
Avengers Endgame’s re-release is out now in cinemas.
