'90 Day Fiancé': David and Annie Joke About Her Infamous Dowry in Preview for Their New Show

David Toborowsky and Annie Suwan Toborowsky were not a fan-favorite couple, to say the least, when they first appeared on the fifth season of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé. David, then 48, was recently divorced when he met then-24-year-old Annie on a trip to her home country of Thailand. Once the May-December couple arrived in the U.S., problems with David’s drinking, his estranged relationships with his children, and his finances quickly arose.

Nevertheless, David and Annie ended up getting married. Since then, they’ve become unexpected fan favorites, improving both their financial situation and communication skills. They’ve appeared on TLC spinoffs like 90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined, 90 Day Fiancé: What Now, and 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After, but they’re best-known for their lively banter on 90 Day Fiancé: Pillow Talk.

Now, Annie and David – who live in Scottsdale, Arizona, together – have their own digital spinoff series, Spice it Up With David and Annie. Previews for the spinoff, which will air on Facebook Watch, suggest that the episodes will focus on Annie’s new Thai cooking business, in addition to showcasing the humor fans have come to expect from the unlikely pair.

David and Annie’s new spin-off will focus on Thai recipes

Annie recently launched her own business, Cooking With DNA – centered around Thai, Thai fusion, and Thai-inspired recipes. The 90 Day Fiancé star’s business offers Annie’s creative takes on dishes like shrimp fried rice and pad thai, as well as private cooking lessons, catering services, travel tours, and event appearances by both David and Annie.

Accordingly, Spice It Up With David and Annie – which premieres on Wednesday, October 28, on Facebook Watch, and will air weekly episodes – will showcase Annie’s recipes in an intimate kitchen setting. David will be cooking alongside his wife, offering a chance for the friendly, easy banter fans love.

Karen Everett, Chantel Everett’s mom from The Family Chantel, is getting her own 90 Day Fiancé digital spinoff on Facebook Watch. Ask Mama Chantel premieres Thursday, October 22. Like Annie and David’s series, it will feature new episodes on a weekly basis.

TLC President and General Manager Howard Lee recently told Deadline of the upcoming spin-offs: “David, Annie and Chantel’s mom Karen are three larger-than-life personalities whom fans have fallen in love with over several seasons and spinoffs of the 90 Day franchise. While we continue to lead with women audiences in cable, partnering with Facebook Watch lets us go deeper with current 90 Day devotees and expand to all-new digital audiences.”

The preview showcased their fun banter and lighthearted relationship

In Deadline’s preview of Spice It Up With David and Annie, the 90 Day Fiancé couple worked together to cook one of Annie’s favorite dishes: chicken Thai basil. As David and Annie chopped, sliced, and diced vegetables together, they discussed a story from Annie’s childhood.

When she was 10 or 11 years old, Annie shared, she was tearing up while chopping an onion. Her dad came to the kitchen and told her to put a bowl of salt next to the cutting board as she worked, which would prevent her from crying. Now, Annie kept up that ritual every time she sliced an onion to keep the tears from welling up.

“Your dad’s got some good stories,” David said kindly of his father-in-law.

“Yeah, even though he still believes the earth is flat,” Annie laughed in response.

The couple faced many obstacles in getting together

As David chopped the onion alongside his wife, he joked, “This reminds me of when you asked for the dowry. I was crying the same way.”

90 Day Fiancé fans would certainly remember this reference to the couple’s earliest storyline. When David and Annie met, David was struggling financially – often having to borrow from his close friend, Chris Thieneman. That meant paying Annie’s dowry (the equivalent of about $15,000, over $6,000 worth of gold, and two water buffalo), was extremely difficult for him.

On a past episode of 90 Day Fiancé: What Now, Annie and David opened up about the many obstacles they overcame in order to be together.

“I went through a divorce after 20 years of marriage,” David explained at the time of how he met Annie in Thailand. “I had just had a stroke. I had just lost my job. I had lost my home. I restarted my life in Thailand.”

Still, his first meeting with Annie was nothing short of magical.

“I was sitting in a bar having a drink one evening, and I happened to hear someone singing, and it was like this voice of an angel,” David said. “I offered to buy her a drink, and we started talking, and we went out from there…I fell in love with her immediately.”

Annie and David have become much more stable over the years

David proposed to Annie, who said she fell in love with his humor and how he made her laugh, after just 10 days. But after David paid his wife’s dowry and they moved to the U.S., they faced even more problems. The couple had a hard time finding a place to live. They even had to stay in the manager’s apartment above his friend’s storage facility for a while.

“I picture America, it’s like, a La La land,” Annie said of her earliest days in the U.S. “In reality, it’s not like that.”

Since then, Annie’s gotten her work visa, and David got a new job. The 90 Day Fiancé pair has become more financially stable and moved to an apartment in Arizona. Fans will likely be able to hear much more about their journey on the first season of Spice it Up With David and Annie.
