Throughout her ups and downs in the past couple of years, Britney Spears has relied on her loved ones, including boyfriend Sam Asghari.
The singer, 37, and her family have dealt with several setbacks recently. In November, father Jamie suffered a life-threatening colon rupture. His hospitalization and subsequent surgeries have taken an emotional toll on his daughter Britney, a source previously told PEOPLE.
Late last year, the mother of two was gearing up for a return to the Las Vegas strip with her show Domination following her wildly successful Vegas show Britney: Piece of Me on tour that summer. But in January, Spears announced that she was taking an indefinite break from work to support her father.
Earlier this month, an insider told PEOPLE exclusively that the pop star checked into a facility for “all-encompassing wellness treatment.”
But Spears hasn’t been going through it alone: 25-year-old Asghari has been by her side. Here’s everything to know about Spears’ boyfriend of two years.
Asghari, who is the youngest of four siblings, was born in Tehran, Iran, on March 4, 1994.
He moved to Los Angeles in 2006 to live with his father, who worked as a tow truck driver. “I had to leave my friends and family who I was very close with, and I knew I was moving away and never coming back,” he told Men’s Health.
He’s a Model and Fitness Trainer
Before booking the gig as Spears’ onscreen love interest in “Slumber Party,” Asghari, who modeled in Michael Costello’s 2015 show, starred as a construction worker in Fifth Harmony’s “Work from Home” music video.
He’s also an expert at working ou,t as seen in exercise videos he and Spears have shared.
“The exercises, I come up with them, but the videos are because of my better half. She’s the video director,” Asghari told Men’s Health. “She motivates me more than anyone. It’s crazy how I can be humbled by a person like her. If I could be that humble when I’m that high in life, that would be the best thing. She is another blessing that happened to me.”
His motivation to stay fit may have come from his past, before he maintained eight-pack abs and massive biceps.
In his interview with Men’s Health, he revealed he was depressed and significantly overweight just a few years ago.
After getting cut from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln football team before his freshman year, Asghari stopped exercising — but continued to eat like a linebacker. Soon his weight hit 290 lbs.
“I was eating Doritos for breakfast, fast food, sugar, candy, no protein, a lot of carbs, and drinking sugary sodas,” Asghari said. “My nutrition was extremely horrible. The stress and the fear of not going anywhere [in life] combined gave me my depression.”
In 2013, six months after leaving the team, he decided his poor habits had to stop and lost 100 lbs.
Later, Asghari worked at Gold’s Gym and started his full-time career in fitness as a personal trainer even working out for two hours a day and overhauling his diet to focus on lean proteins, vegetables and complex carbs.
Asghari also operates his own soccer academy.
Falling in Love with Britney
Spears and Asghari were first romantically linked after meeting on the set of Spears’ “Slumber Party” music video in 2016.
Then in January 2017, the star revealed how she and Asghari’s romance blossomed between takes. “We were shooting and we were doing this scene where I was doing the walk scene through the hall to go through the door to go to the bedroom, and we were sitting there and we were waiting and waiting together for 20 minutes at a time,” Spears told AMP 103.7’s Fast in the Morning with Nathan Fast and Sybil Summers of her first encounter with Asghari.
“So we were basically forced to talk to each other and he has no idea—I mean, he knows my name—but he doesn’t know me as a person. He’s like ‘What is this girl like?’ and I have no idea who the hell he is,” she said.
“I was excited that I get [sic] to meet one of the biggest artists of all time. I had butterflies,” Asghari told Men’s Health.
He and Spears became Instagram official on New Year’s Day 2017.
The cute couple has been inseparable since, going on cozy date night dinners, attending friends’ birthday parties and celebrating special occasions together — including Spears’ birthday and Valentine’s Day. The couple even fueled engagement rumors after Spears was spotted vacationing on a Hawaiian beach with a sparkly diamond ring on that finger.
After news of the singer’s decision to seek treatment earlier this month, Asghari shared his support on social media.
“Fall in love with taking care of yourself. Mind. Body. Spirit,” read the panel of text in his post, which was regrammed from Spears’ account. “It isn’t weakness, It’s a sign of absolute strength, people should only be inspired by this, at least I am,” Asghari wrote.
