Elton John lookalike shares real life health battle parallels with music icon

An Elton John lookalike has shared his real-life health battle parallels to the music icon, as he aims to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

Quarry manager David Bills, 58, began performing as the Rocketman singer after dressing up for his brother's 40th birthday as the star.

Friends and family told David, "you REALLY do look like him [Elton]," – and two years later, he began performing professionally after meeting a Pavarotti lookalike who invited David to perform as the singer at events such as restaurant openings.

From there he became a member of an official lookalike agency in London, but David is now using his career to raise awareness of prostate cancer after explaining that both he and Elton had previously been diagnosed with the disease.

Sir Elton John, 76, previously opened up about his own battle with prostate cancer in his autobiography, Me.

Writing in his book, Elton revealed he was diagnosed with the disease in 2017 and had surgery to remove his prostate, with Daily Mail reporting the singer as saying: "They’d caught it early. The oncologist told me I had two options. One was surgery to remove my prostate.

"The other was a course of radiation and chemotherapy that meant I would have to go back to hospital dozens of times. I went straight for the surgery."

Like Elton, David was also diagnosed with prostate cancer in September 2020 after noticing changes in his body and visited his doctor for a checkup.

Following the check-up, doctors noticing he had high PSA levels and following further tests, was advised that his PSA levels had remained high.

The Elton John lookalike underwent further tests including MRI and bone scans, before he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

David choose to have his prostate removed and is now hoping to raise awareness of the disease by sharing his story and his own health parallels with Elton John, via his support for a new online resource.

The Elton John lookalike is supporting Prostate Cancer Research's new National Lottery funded website resource called Info Pool, which includes information about testing for the disease, clinical trials and patient videos.

Info Pool was co-designed with patients and clinicians, and aims to help support those at risk of the disease and those diagnosed with prostate cancer, to help understand the lived experience of people like them.

David is keen to raise awareness of this resource as "there is nothing like this out there", in order to ensure "more men like him and Elton can continue on with healthy lives for a good while longer."

The Prostate Cancer Research Info Pool resource can be accessed via their website here.
