Comedian and former Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins will become the latest celebrity to host the British LGBT Awards later this month.

The 52-year-old will follow in the footsteps of famous names such as Mel B, Alan Carr and Kelly Osbourne in hosting the star-studded bash in London, on June 24.

Celebrities and organisations with a track record of promoting LGBT+ rights will be honoured at the showbiz event, with nominees including singer Lady Gaga, Rylan, Steps, Olly Alexander and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Doctor Who actress Jodie Whittaker, Formula One star Lewis Hamilton, Harry Potter stalwart Daniel Radcliffe and former Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall are also up for one of the coveted awards.

Perkins said: "I am very excited to be hosting the 2022 British LGBT Awards. This is one of the year’s most important celebrations of the LGBT+ community and I’m delighted to be involved.

"It is always such a great event, shining a light on role models and those who advance the rights of LGBT+ people in Britain and across the world."

She added: "This event always attracts the biggest names, and this year will be no exception. I'm honoured to be a part of it. It is going to be a blast!"

Billy Porter, Michaela Jae Rodriguez and Indya Moore and are all in the running for the Celebrity of the Year award alongside The Crown star Emma Corrin, while multiple Grammy and BRIT Award-winning artist Dua Lipa, non-binary singer-songwriter Sam Smith, British rapper Lady Leshurr and pop legends Steps will battle it out for the MTV-sponsored Music Artist of the Year gong.

The awards have been host to some memorable celebrity moments over the years – including Philip Schofield crying as he collected his first LGBT Award after coming out in 2020.

The star-studded event was also where Scouse comedian John Bishop made a moving speech about his gay son in 2018.

As the star collected his honour for Ally of the Year, the dad-of-three discussed life with wife Melanie and sons Joe, Luke and Daniel.

He said: "One of my sons has a tattoo on his ankle that was meant to be Africa but looks like Australia, one of my sons mumbles and one of my sons is a gay man.

"I’ll be honest, there’s been loads of nights when me and my wife have sat up and worried and worried and worried. What are we going to do if he doesn’t stop mumbling?"
