Mi, a mask I wear myself! Sound Of Music stars who played the von Trapp children reunite online to promote face coverings inspired by their famous ‘curtain clothing’ from the film

The actors who became part of cinematic history when they were cast as the von Trapp children in The Sound Of Music have reunited online to promote face masks inspired by the ‘patterned curtain’ ensembles they sported in the film.

Debbie Turner, the American actress who played Marta von Trapp, has created a line of face coverings in fabric reminiscent of the drapes-turned-clothes worn by the youngsters in the 1965 classic.

The designer’s surviving on-screen siblings shared their support for the product by each posing in the masks for a photo on the 64-year-old’s website, which was then shared on Twitter by Kym Karath, who played the youngest von Trapp, Gretl.

In the film, governess Maria (portrayed by Julie Andrews) used her green patterned curtains to make outfits for the sheltered von Trapp children to play in.

Social media users rejoiced at the virtual reunion, with one labelling it a ‘great photo’, while others praised the masks as ‘cute’.

‘Film Von Trapps wearing curtain masks. Our family wears masks, what about yours?’ Kym captioned the image this week.

Kym and Turner were captured alongside Angela Cartwright (who played Brigitta), Nicholas Hammond (who played Friedrich) and Duane Chase (who played Kurt).

Sadly, Heather Menzies-Urich, who portrayed Louisa, and Charmian Carr, who played Liesl, died in 2017 and 2016 respectively.

Twitter users were keen to share their delight regarding the photograph, calling it ‘great’ and ‘such cuteness’.

Headbands and masquerade masks also available in the green patterned fabric.

‘Own a piece of nostalgia! Limited Edition,’ Debbie wrote on her website. ‘My masks are hand made with similar fabrics to The Sound of Music von Trapp kids’ curtain play clothes as seen in the movie.

‘Adjustable elastic for an excellent fit. Made in the USA. Look for “Debbie Turner” on the tag.’

Due to overwhelming demand, my von Trapp fingers are sewing as fast as they can. Please be patient and your order will go out as soon as possible!

Known as The SoM 7, the group formed their own sort of family over the months of making the musical.

Their parents befriended one another as the young performers travelled to Austria for filming, and the actors themselves have remained close for decades.

‘We’re beyond friends. We’re second family,’ said Kym previously. ‘As adults, we were deeply bonded, so our lives have really interwoven with each other.’

Where are the von Trapp children now?

MARTADebbie was as much an athlete as an actress as a child, and she opted for sports after playing Marta von Trapp.

The keen ski-er and mother-of-four began a new career as an interior designer and now owns a design business in Minnesota.

LIESL: Charmian Carr quit Hollywood to focus on raising her two daughters Jennifer and Emily, and became a successful interior designer. She died in 2016, aged 73.

Having played the eldest von Trapp daughter, she published two books about her experience making the film: Forever Liesl and Letters To Liesl.

BRIGITTA: Angela Cartwright, from Los Angeles, who started performing at age 3, went on to star in the TV series Lost in Space and Make Room for Granddaddy after playing Brigitta in The Sound Of Music.

She traded acting for other artistic pursuits, including photography and painting, after having children.

KURT: Duane was 15-years-old when he took on the role of Kurt von Trapp. He continued acting until his teens, including an appearance in the 1966 Kurt Russell film, Follow Me, Boys! as well as acting in Western TV series The Big Valley.

Chase, of Seattle, switched gears in college, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in geology and working as a software engineer.

FRIEDRICH: For Nicholas Hammond, who portrayed the eldest von Trapp son, The Sound Of Music came early in a still-thriving entertainment career.

Hammond continued to collect film and TV credits as he pursued an English literature degree at Princeton. He now lives in Australia and works as an actor, writer and director.

GRETL: Five-year-old Kym stole hearts when she played the youngest child Gretl. Roles in Lost In Space and The Brady Bunch followed but after going to college at USC, she focused on parenting rather than performing when her son Eric was born with disabilities.

Along with other parents, Karath helped establish the Aurelia Foundation, which provides services for special-needs individuals once they finish high school.

LOUISA: The Sound Of Music was Heather Menzies-Urich’s first movie. She continued acting after she wed actor Robert Urich, but stopped when their children were born. The Canadian-born actress died at the age of 68 in 2017.
