Whether you’re fighting frizz, suffering from split ends or just looking to soothe your scalp, picking the right shampoo can make a huge difference to the way your hair looks and feels.
Although shop shelves are swimming with different products and price points, not every shampoo out there is the perfect match for your hair type – and you could end up with greasy roots or dried-out lengths.

*"Use less shampoo when you wash your hair. Most of us use too much and it causes hair to be greasy, so start with a small amount and use more if you need – a 50p sized blob is usually enough," says Gorka Arraras, senior master stylist at Charles Worthington.
* "How often you should be washing your hair depends on its type , but on average it should be around two to three times a week to get rid of product build-up. Afro hair and very dry types can get away with fewer washes," Gorka adds.
* "Don’t be afraid to use a conditioner from a different range to your shampoo," says Gorka. "A shampoo cleanses and targets the scalp, while your conditioner looks after the ends of your hair – and these two areas have very different needs."
BEST FOR BREAKAGE-PRONE ENDS
L'Oréal Paris Elvive Full Resist Shampoo, buy it here for £4.99
Enriched with strand-strengthening biotin and vitamin B5, this acts as a lightwear barrier on your hair and protects ends from splitting. It also helps reduce breakage-related hair loss.
Our tester says: "I used this while waiting for a pricier shampoo that I ordered to arrive, but I ended up finishing the whole bottle. Within a month of use I started to see fewer hairs in my hair brush. I have fine hair and my roots felt a little more greasy on day two, but nothing a dry shampoo couldn’t fix."
BEST FOR OILY SCALPS
Grow Gorgeous Defense Anti-Pollution Shampoo, buy it here for £14
This is why your scalp gets itchy in hot weather – and this clever £9 product could be the fix you need
Made for anyone living in an urban area, this gently cleanses away grime and pollution with an SLS and sulfate-free formula. It’s also designed to remove excess product build-up on scalps.
Our tester says: "My hair gets oily so fast as it’s fine, but my ends are also really dry – which is made worse by my daily washing. After using this shampoo, I noticed how clean my scalp felt on day two (when it would usually be greasy), and I’m happy to say I can now go a few days without washing my hair."
BEST FOR BLONDES
Moroccan Oil Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo, buy it here for £18.85
A toning shampoo specifically for blonde hair that needs a cooler colour. The violet pigments neutralise brassiness while the cleansing formula leaves hair soft and residue-free.
Our tester says: "I recently got my hair dyed and some of the highlights are just a little brassier than I’d like, so I’ve been using this to cool the tone of my hair. It’s punchy purple, and tricky to wash off shower walls, but worth it. I use it every other wash – specifically on my fringe area as I find the rest of my hair doesn’t need as frequent toning – and my blonde turns a lot more ashy."
BEST FOR DULL AND DRY LENGTHS
Lee Stafford Coco Loco with Agave Shine Shampoo, buy it here for £6.99
Olaplex has just launched an incredible new hair product – and the before and after photos are amazing
The original formula has had a makeover and now features shine-boosting agave essence. It also contains coconut oil for hydrating dry ends.
Our tester says: "Even though I have straight hair, I really struggle to keep flyaways at bay, and my locks never look shiny. I loved the coconut smell of this, which made me feel like I was away on holiday somewhere tropical. It left a bit of residue on my scalp but my ends felt so soft and much smoother than usual."
BEST FOR SMOOTHING STRANDS
Nuddy Practice What You Peach Ultra Volume Blow Dry Shampoo Bar, buy it here for £8.95
This money-saving £8 shampoo bar promises EIGHTY washes and a blow dry effect – but does it compare to your regular bottle?
Made with fully recyclable cardboard packaging, this bar will last up to 80 washes and promises to deliver the same voluminous, smoothed effect that a good liquid shampoo can deliver.
Our tester says: "It was tricky to get the soap suds into my hair and took quite a while of me lathering my hands with the bar then transferring the product to my head – but when dry, my hair felt weightless (rather than volumised, I’d say) and a lot smoother than usual. It might be more time-consuming to use for anyone with thicker locks than me."
BEST FOR COLOURED HAIR
Moo Hair Miracle Shampoo, buy it here for £22
Seven best leave-in conditioners for taming and softening all hair types
A cruelty-free shampoo with a gentle and nourishing formula, suitable for natural or colour-treated hair. It contains marula oil and Icelandic moss to protect the hair from UV exposure and environmental toxins.
Our tester says: "After years of playing around with my colour, and a recent platinum blonde phase, it’s safe to say my hair was looking a bit worse for wear. This shampoo has completely transformed it from dull and brittle to soft and shiny – plus it smells heavenly and the glass packaging looks great on my bathroom shelf."
