Queen Elizabeth II inspires a curiosity in people that most royals and celebrities can’t rival. People want to know what she is doing every second of every day.
One thing that always comes up about the Queen is her diet. What does she eat? What does she drink?
The woman is 93 years old and appears to be just as healthy as ever. So, what is she eating to stay so fit?
What does the Queen eat?
On a normal day, the Queen will have four meals, breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner.
According to Darren McGrady, a former Buckingham Palace chef, the Queen will typically have a bowl of cereal, a boiled egg, and a cup of tea for breakfast. Her favorite cereal is Special K, he told Food and Wine.
For lunch, she steps it up a bit, and will have a four-course meal, starting with a compound salad. The entree would most likely include meat.
“She loves to eat game,” McGrady said.
Then, she will eat pudding, which would be similar to desserts that are eaten in the U.S.
“Anything you would call dessert is pudding,” McGrady said. And finally, she’ll eat some sliced fruit.
If the Queen isn’t having people over for lunch or dinner, then she will typically just eat some lean meat or fish and vegetables.
“She eats small portions,” McGrady said.
For afternoon tea, the Queen used to enjoy eating a few slices of cake every afternoon.
“The Queen is a total chocoholic,” he said. Her favorite is chocolate biscuit cake, but she would also often enjoy a chocolate éclair or a slice of chocolate perfection pie.
“Now, the Queen has cut back on cakes and just has sandwiches,” McGrady said. She also takes her Earl Gray tea with no cream or sugar and stays away from most carbs in order to stay healthy.
What is her drink of choice?
This week, the Queen visited the National Institute of Agricultural Botany near Cambridge to celebrate 100 years of crop research.
While there, the conversation turned to wine.
“NIAB is involved in almost every crop, and one of our people mentioned we had an experiential vineyard in Kent and [the Queen] said she had some vines in Windsor,” Tina Barsby, chief executive of NIAB told reporters at the event.
“I told her that the official wine for the Oxford and Cambridge boat race was English sparkling rather than French champagne, and that English wine was becoming more popular and much better,” Barsby said. “And she said, ‘I don’t actually drink wine myself, but I hear it’s very good.’”
Though she doesn’t drink wine, she does drink four cocktails a day, according to reports from Business Insider.
Before lunch, she will have a gin and Dubonnet. According to People, the Queen’s cousin, Margaret Rhodes, said that she and the Queen would also often have a dry gin martini with lunch.
So, if you want to eat and drink like the Queen, it all boils down to a few things. Eat light, have chocolate as often as possible, and keep the gin on hand.
