When Kate Middleton and Prince Charles have been seen together, they often show a friendly but formal relationship. This is why affectionate behaviour at recent outings may come as a surprise.

The Duchess of Cambridge met Prince William around 20 years ago and it is likely she has known Charles for much of this time.

However, it has only been more recently that the royals have shown more public affection.

This was seen as members of the Royal Family gathered to attend the funeral of Prince Philip in April.

As Prince Charles paid his respects to his father, Kate was around to offer a comforting arm.

This type of public affection is rare between the royals, body language expert Judi James explained.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, she said: “At his father’s funeral, Prince Charles was visibly moved by grief and even tearful at times.

“It was Kate who was spotted placing a comforting arm around Charles’s shoulders in a very tactile and spontaneous gesture of open affection that seemed surprising at the time.”

Judi suggested the “spontaneous” gesture from the Duchess of Cambridge appeared out of character for the royals.

If at all, Judi claimed Prince Charles usually reserves that type of affection for his niece Zara Tindall.

She continued: “Both Kate and her father-in-law are known for their rather politely formal body language displays at the bigger royal occasions and neither are overly tactile.

“It usually takes niece Zara Tindall to break through Charles’s public reserve with hugs and laughter.”

Prince Charles is thought to have a close relationship with Zara and they are happy to display this more publicly than other royals.

Some cues found in Kate and Charles’ body language could suggest a similar relationship between them.

The expert stated their easy rapport could suggest they have a more affectionate family relationship in private.

“The way that Kate performed her hug with ease and confidence suggested she and Charles might have grown a warmer relationship than expected behind the scenes,” she continued.

Although rare, Judi commented on a small number of occasions where the royals have hinted at a closer private relationship.

She stated: “Previous photos of the pair here do show a theme of unexpected rapport and affection between them.”

In some cases, it seems Kate may take the lead with Charles even when Prince William is there.

Judi concluded: “What makes this even more surprising is that William’s relationship with his father has looked uneasy at times.

“These displays of affection from Kate look as though she is taking the lead rather than following her husband’s.”
