How you can SAVE money by getting married abroad: Research shows destinations like Mauritius and Sri Lanka are almost HALF the price of the UK (while France is the most expensive)

If you think that having your wedding in an exotic location is going to cost you the earth – then you’ll be surprised to hear that a UK wedding is actually more expensive.

A UK based travel company, SN Travel, has revealed that an average wedding in destinations like Mauritius and Sri Lanka are actually half the price of weddings based in Europe.

Through their study they found that the average wedding in Mauritius is the cheapest – and on average costs £12,492 – which is more than half the cost of a wedding in France.

The average for having your nuptials in the European country could come to over £26,000. While getting married at home, in the UK, could set you back over £23,000.

Costing an average of £12,492 for the full package, a destination wedding in Mauritius is cheaper than every European wedding destination by over £6,500

The Indian Ocean is often perceived as an expensive destination. However, the report has revealed that the tropical island of Mauritius, which analysed open data from wedding suppliers around the world, is the cheapest country to get married in the world. 

Known for its luscious beaches and picturesque sunsets you could return home, not just with the man of your dreams, but with Instagram worthy wedding photos too.  

Costing an average of £12,492 for the full package, a destination wedding in Mauritius is cheaper than every European wedding destination by over £6,500.

Tropical islands in the Indian Ocean proved to be the cheapest wedding destinations overall with Sri Lanka, Maldives, Zanzibar and Seychelles all coming in at less than £14,000 for the full wedding package.

The average cost of getting married in Sri Lanka came in the second cheapest at £12,857

Luckily if you want to get married on one of the islands and have the crystal blue waters as your back drop then it will only set you back a little over £13,000 – at an average of £13,106. While Sri Lanka came in even cheaper at £12,857. 

The biggest factor when it came to cost in Mauritius was the venue – with the average price of the venue in the idyllic location costing just £511. The average price for other tropical destination venues, including the Dominican Republic, Barbados, Mexico and the Maldives, also came in at less than £750.

France surprisingly topped the list – thanks to the cost of the venue’s there – and you’d be expected to pay an average of £9398 for one

A wedding in Italy won’t come cheap either, so whether you want to get married in the countryside or in a well known city – you’re looking at an average of £23,478

Whilst getting married in a French chateau might be the dream, it could soon become a nightmare if you are planning a wedding on a tighter budget. 

Pricey weddings were most common in Europe with Italy, the UK, Greece, Spain and Portugal all taking the top spots for the most expensive places to get married at over £19,500.

This was almost £3000 more than other expensive European destinations including Italy, the UK, Greece and Spain – however they would still set you back a lot, with all costing more than £5000.

A study last year also showed that for weddings in the UK 33 per cent of brides and grooms say they overspend the most on food and drink, spending an average of £5,862. And the cake alone costs couples an average of £323 

Other costs for each wedding looked at hiring local DJ’s, florists and make up artists, while other fixed costs, such as dresses, suits and rings, that you would take with you – came in at £9,500 each time.
