Prince Harry recently took on the British tabloids in Meghan Markle’s defense, releasing a blistering statement about how the media has spread lies about the former Suits star. The statement coincided with a lawsuit against the Daily Mail for publishing personal letters that were allegedly written by Markle. While it was pretty amazing to see Harry stick up for his wife, rumors quickly surfaced that he was acting against the advice of senior aides and, more notably, Queen Elizabeth.
Did Harry get permission from Queen Elizabeth?
Following Prince Harry’s statement, reports surfaced that Queen Elizabeth advised against taking on the tabloids. Sources also claimed that Prince Harry left his father, Prince Charles, and his brother, Prince William, completely in the dark.
Despite the rumors, it looks like Harry handled the situation properly. According to Express, Prince Harry kept Queen Elizabeth in the loop before releasing the statement about the tabloids.
Prince Harry and Markle’s communications secretary, Sara Latham,confirmed that Her Majesty had read the statement prior to its release thisweek. Latham did not, however, say anything about the rest of the royal family.
In light of Latham’s comments, some sources say that the Duke ofSussex did not tell his father or brother until after the fact.
Some of the couple’s top aides, including their privatesecretary, Samantha Cohen, also reportedly had no idea what was happening. This,of course, has not been confirmed, though the aides allegedly gave the pairsome space because of the private nature of the statement.
There is no telling how Queen Elizabeth reacted to the statement,but there are some royal sources who say she was not happy about it.
Prince Harry blasts the tabloids
Prince Harry released the statement while in the final stages of his family’s South Africa tour. He also kicked off his lawsuit against the Daily Mail, which he claims published Markle’s private letters to her father.
Lawyers for the royal family argue that the publication unlawfully took excerpts out of context to generate negative headlines about Markle. For their part, the Daily Mail claims that they did not alter the letters in any way.
While Prince Harry and Markle have remained quiet over the pastfew years, he did not pull any punches in his official statement. Not only didhe label Markle as a victim of the tabloids, but he also told fans that he hasbeen a “silent witness to her private suffering.”
“Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victimsof a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with nothought to the consequences – a ruthless campaign that has escalated over thepast year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son,”the statement read.
Harry added that there are consequences to spreading rumors in the press, especially when they are done out of pure malice. He also explained how these false reports often start out as blatant lies but are eventually mistaken as truth.
A law firm named Schillings is representing Prince Harry and Markle in their case against the Daily Mail. They claim that the paper violated the Data Protection Act of 2018 and misused information that was meant to be private.
Why is Harry suing?
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not say which letter was the cause of the lawsuit. There was a letter, however, published last winter that was written by Markle to her father.
At the time, Markle was writing to her father about how she wouldlike to heal their relationship. But the only excerpts that were published inthe paper talked about how Markle’s father had broken her heart.
This, of course, is not the first time Harry has defended Markle in public. Early in their romance, Prince Harry blasted the press for how they were covering their relationship.
Prince Harry also has a history of dealing with the paparazzi, sowhat Markle has been going through has been particularly hard on him.
In fact, Harry mentioned his late mother, Princess Diana, in thestatement, who died while running from the paparazzi in Paris.
Queen Elizabeth has yet to comment on the lawsuit. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just wrapped up their tour of South Africa and are expected to return to London this week.
