To find out which liners are ready to do dancefloor duty, the OK! beauty team has combined forces with our trusty Real Beauty testers and got busy scribbling. We tested out a selection of formulas, covering liquid eyeliners, felt-tip liner pens and pencils, all of which claimed to be both budge-proof and foolproof. The best budge-proof eyeliners to try

Shiseido Crayon Microliner Ink, £20 here

Serious high tech in eyeliner form – this clever new pencil uses “thermo-sensory gel” that reacts to the warmth in your skin and transforms into an ink-like texture. Available in 10 shades.

Real Beauty tester Julie says: “This feels amazing to apply: it glides on easily and feels very soft and buttery. I applied it in the morning; it survived an afternoon of roller disco and a kitchen disco karaoke night, and didn't budge once. I'm usually a liquid eyeliner girl but this is much better. I absolutely love it!” 5/5

Maybelline Tattoo Liner Smokey Gel Pencil Liner, £5.99 here

A waterproof pencil that claims to glide on then dry to a “semi-permanent” (read: up to 36 hour wear) finish. Comes in black or brown, and has a smudger tip at one end to avoid harsh lines.

Beauty director Lynne says: “Not just a brilliant new everyday essential, it’s also just the sort of product I’d take if I was going away and short on space. It’s so versatile – by day, I’ll define just my lash line, using the smudger tip for a soft finish, and for night, I’ll take the pencil into my lid crease, blend and voila – budge-proof smoky eye in an instant. LOVE.” 5/5

Too Faced Killer Liner Gel Eyeliner Pencil, £16 here

Always take your make-up off before bed… but it's tempting not to when this liner promises to stay smudgeproof for 36 hours! It’s a gel pencil in 11 shades, more than half of which are easy-to-wear neutrals, plus a few brighter options too.

Real Beauty tester Kirstie says: “This doesn’t drag on the skin like some eyeliners and goes on very smoothly. It doesn't smudge and lasts well. I’m careful to take my make-up off every night but I’m not sure it would last 36 hours, as it does fade a little by the end of the day. It's a great product and definitely one I'd buy as it’s quick and easy to apply and really makes an impact.” 5/5

Lottie London AM to PM Retractable Liner Eyeliner, £4.95 here

A skinny, retractable ‘gel-like’ liner that comes in three shades – brown, back and a pale pink-nude.

Real Beauty tester Maxine says: “Slim, neat and very portable, handy for slipping in your make-up bag. It’s easy and smooth to apply, and didn’t drag my eyelid. I found the width good, and the nib is nice and fine so you could build up intensity if you wanted a stronger look. It stayed on well overall, though it slightly smudged. Took a fair bit of scrubbing to remove too (my make-up remover wipe didn’t budge it!).” 4/5

Il Makiage Black Card Eyeliner, £21 here

The latest release from this cult US brand promises a water-resistant black formula which nails anything from super-fine tightliner to maximalist flicks.

Lynne says: “Such a lovely, super-skinny nib – this got right into my lash line and, while nicely pigmented, it wasn’t SO superblack it looked overpowering. It’s easy to control and lasted all night without transferring.” 5/5

KVD Vegan Beauty Tattoo Liner, £18 here

This award-winning fine-tip pen offers all-day wear and budge-proof, jet black pigment. Shop it in a black or a brown shade.

Deputy beauty editor Zoe says: “I know I haven’t worn much eyeliner in the past year or two, but when I have bothered to do a proper eye look, I almost certainly opted to use this. I always come back to it because it applies so easily and precisely, and doesn’t smudge no matter how oily my skin gets. It also never seems to dry out, which means I’ve been using the same one for months and months now (grim, I know, but economical).”
