These numbers are huge – in 2019 there were 7.7 billion people worldwide, of which at least 3.5 billion were online. This means that social media is used by one in three people worldwide and more than two-thirds of all Internet users.

Social media has changed the world. The rapid and widespread adoption of these technologies is changing the way we find partners, access news information, and organize to demand political change.
Who uses social media? When did the rise of social media begin and how has the number of users changed over time? Here we answer these and other important questions to understand the history of social media in the world.
We begin by pointing out key trends and end by looking at the adoption rate of social media compared to other modern communication technologies.
MySpace was the first social networking site to reach one million monthly active users, a feat it achieved in 2004. This is arguably the beginning of social media as we know it.1
Windows Of Developmental Sensitivity To Social Media
Some of the major social media sites like Facebook, YouTube, and Reddit have been around for a decade or more, but other major sites are much newer.
For example, TikTok was launched in September 2016 and by mid-2018 it had reached half a billion users. To give you an idea: TikTok gained an average of 20 million new users per month during this period.
The data also shows rapid changes in the opposite direction. The old places of power have disappeared. In 2008, Hi5, MySpace and Friendster were competitors to Facebook, but in 2012 they had no market share. The case of MySpace is remarkable considering that in 2006 it temporarily surpassed Google as the most visited site in the United States.
Most of the social media sites that have survived in the past decade have evolved greatly in terms of what users have to offer. For example, Twitter initially did not allow users to upload videos or photos. This has been possible since 2011, and today more than 50% of content viewed on Twitter includes images and videos.

Facebook has dominated the social media market for a decade, but the other five sites also have more than half a billion users.

Study Shows Habitual Checking Of Social Media May Impact Young Adolescents’ Brain Development
Snapchat and Instagram, the “age gradient” is very dynamic – the popularity of these sites decreases rapidly with age. The majority of people under 25 use Snapchat (73%), while only 3% of people over 65 use it.
Since these sites are new, it is difficult to know how much of this age is the result of a “group effect”. In other words: it is not clear that today’s youth will continue to use Snapchat as they get older. If they do, the age will decrease.
This chart shows the percentage of men and women who use different devices in the United States in 2021 – the line shows equality. Sites above the curve are more popular with women and those below are more popular with men.
In some areas, gender differences are important. The proportion of women using Pinterest is 3 times higher than the proportion of men using the platform. It was the opposite on Reddit: the proportion of men was twice as high.
The Influence Of Social Media On Society
From a back-of-the-envelope calculation, we know that if Facebook had 2.3 billion users in 2019, then at least 30% of the world used social media.2 This is an average – usage rates were much higher in some regions. the world, especially for certain population groups.
Young people use social networks more often. In rich countries, where Internet access is universal, most young adults use it.
Our table shows the proportion of people aged 16 to 24 who use social networks in different countries. As we can see, the OECD average is around 90%.
If today’s youth continue to use social media throughout their lives, then it is likely that social media will grow rapidly as the Internet spreads to low-income countries.

According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, US adults aged 18 to 29 are more likely to get their news indirectly from social media than directly from newspapers or news sites. They also say they are online “almost constantly”. 4
Social Media Has Changed The Lives Of Modern Society
There is evidence that even in other wealthy countries, people spend many hours a day on the Internet. The following chart shows how many hours young people spend online in different rich countries. As we can see, the OECD average is more than 4 hours a day; In some countries the average is more than 6 hours a day.
The percentage of American adults who use social media has increased from 5% in 2005 to 79% in 2019. Even on the international stage, the speed of diffusion is impressive: Facebook has grown from 1.5% of the world’s population in 2008 to 30 in 2018.5

Constantly Connected: How Media Use Can Affect Your Child
Ipsos recruited young people through their parents who were part of its Knowledge Panel, a probability-based website group recruited primarily through national random sampling of local addresses. The survey was weighted to be representative of American youth between the ages of 13 and 17 who live with their parents by age, gender, race, ethnicity, family income and other categories.
