Light pollution refers to artificial changes in the natural level of light outside. It is harmful to:

What you need to know: Choosing better outdoor lighting, passing lighting ordinances in your local area, and more.

Light Pollution Has Complex Effects On Animal Vision

We’ve come a long way in 30 years, from a small nonprofit in Arizona to the world’s leading authority on light pollution.

International organizations restore the nighttime environment and protect communities from the harmful effects of light pollution through outreach, advocacy and conservation.

This is a global 24-hour virtual event that will keep you inspired and empowered to fight light pollution in your area.

Light pollution disturbs wildlife, affects human health, wastes money and energy, contributes to climate change, and prevents us from observing the universe.

Air, Noise, And Light Pollution

Following responsible lighting practices, passing dark-sky friendly legislation, and promoting scientific research in this area are just a few ways to address light pollution. You can join too!

Our International Dark Sky Places Program works with communities, parks, municipalities and the public to validate and protect dark sky places for people and wildlife.

Our approval program works with communities, manufacturers, retailers, designers and others to review and certify dark-sky-friendly outdoor lighting equipment and dark-sky-friendly outdoor lighting projects .

Our 60+ international chapters are at the forefront of the dark sky movement. Want to participate? Find your local chapter: Have you ever looked at the bright buildings or street lights in your neighborhood and thought they were too much? You know, the light that shines in all directions, or maybe your bedroom window, instead of just illuminating the intended area. That’s light pollution.

The Devastating Role Of Light Pollution In The ‘insect Apocalypse’

Light pollution is the misdirection of excessive/obstructive outdoor artificial light in a nighttime environment. Excessive light pollution can pollute the night sky, interfere with astronomical research, damage ecosystems, waste energy, and affect health.

Towns, cities and suburbs are known for their excessive light. These light sources can be found through exterior/interior lighting, advertising, street lights, parking lots, etc.

For non-stargazers, excess illumination or light pollution may be a new concept and they may not consider it a problem. What’s worse is that the dark starry night sky does not disappear.

Excessive lighting has become a global issue that requires a paradigm shift. Before we can make positive changes, we must understand the negative effects of light pollution and strengthen our connection with the natural environment.

Light Pollution: The Dark Side Of Keeping The Lights On

When discussing light pollution issues, people often talk about using light for safety reasons. Although there is no evidence in studies that lighting improves safety, the bigger issue is choosing lighting that is more efficient and illuminates only the places we need when we need them.

According to the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), less than 100 years ago everyone could see the starry sky at night.

Millions of people now live in cities that can never see the Milky Way from where they live, or are trapped in a permanent skylight.

For example, on August 14, 2003, nearly 50 million people in Ontario and the eastern United States experienced a widespread blackout, leaving them without power for several days.

During this time, even in downtown Toronto (population 250,000), people saw the Milky Way for the first time.

Light pollution changes our view of the sky, making it harder to see smaller or fainter objects.

It cleans out the stars, constellations, galaxies and nebulae, reducing the overall contrast between these objects and the dark sky, affecting the study of astronomy and the love of astrophotography.

Effects Of Air Pollution

The night sky seen from a city with light pollution cannot compare to the detail seen in a truly dark sky.

While large objects such as planets and well-known constellations can be seen from cities, faint objects or deep sky objects need to be captured against a darker sky.

There are challenges with astrophotography in light-polluted areas. Light pollution filters are often the first line of defense against faded skies.

Popular light pollution filters include Optolong L-Pro and Astronomik CLS. Filters attempt to ignore the bandpass of visible light relative to artificial light.

Some photographers insist that shooting without filters is best. In this case, you need a solid game plan for processing images to reveal deep sky objects from bright skies.

Taking distant objects through a telescope has the advantage of isolating a small portion of the bright sky, whereas a Milky Way panorama shows almost the entire sky.

It’s easier to isolate the Milky Way or nebula from a brown sky than it is to dig out every star and constellation in a night scene photo. Therefore, I do not recommend taking wide-angle photos of the night sky in areas with light pollution.

Astrophotographers often use the Bortel scale as a way to measure the brightness (or quality) of the night sky relative to light pollution. The Bortle scale is divided into nine levels (1-9), with level 9 being the worst level of light pollution. Five people or less are required to view the Milky Way.

There are many ways to measure the brightness of the night sky, from using special equipment like the SQM to recording your sightings and comparing them to others around the world.

You can use the Clear Outside mobile app to get an overview of your current Bortle Scale rating.

You can also access a light pollution map to determine your light pollution levels, which will provide a Bortle rating classification. This is handy if you want to head into darker skies to take landscape photos of the Milky Way or deep space objects.

Light Pollution Definition

As mentioned above, light pollution affects the night sky and the hobby of astrophotography, but light pollution affects more than just astronomers/astrophotographers.

Life on Earth has always had a natural source of light through the day and night cycles created by the sun and moon. This cycle, known as the circadian rhythm, acts as an internal clock that our bodies follow and is regulated by the light sources around us.

Our bodies produce melatonin during this cycle, which is necessary for our overall health. Too much artificial light at night can disrupt circulation and suppress melatonin production, which negatively affects human health.

Just as humans rely on the day-night cycle to stay healthy, ecosystems rely on this cycle for reproduction, nutrition, sleep, protection from predators, and more.

Light Pollution Speech

There are several examples of the type of natural disturbance that affects the current ecological balance (migratory birds, turtle hatching, etc.). Reducing the number of insects due to the attraction of light can also have a negative effect on the balance of nature, since all species depend on insects.

For nocturnal animals, “the introduction of artificial light may represent the most radical change humans have made to their environment,” said research scientist Christopher Kyba.

Unnecessary resource use is a waste, including using too much light or light where it is not needed.

The IDA estimates that at least 30 percent of outdoor lighting in the United States is wasted, most of it unshielded lamps. In U.S. terms dollar, it totals $3.3 billion and emits 21 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Light Pollution: Environmental Impact And Health Risks

We can make better lighting choices to reduce energy waste and carbon emissions. This saves money and ultimately allows everyone to enjoy the night sky.

There are many ways you and your community can take action to combat light pollution to reduce risks to ecosystems, human health, and protect the night sky.

You can do this by talking to your friends and neighbors about the importance of reducing light pollution, engaging with the larger community online through social media, setting up an outreach table at a local event, or advocating for the creation of a new policy in your town Lighting Regulations.

It’s often said in the astrophotography community that “there’s no substitute for a dark sky.” This statement is very true because you will always get better pictures where the sky is free of pollution.

Light Pollution Hides Milky Way From 80% Of North Americans

It used to take me 1-4 hours to enjoy the dark sky. The best time to enjoy dark sky locations is during the new moon phase so you can fully appreciate the number of stars in the sky.

The truth is that most of us spend most of our time at home under a light polluted sky. To photograph deep sky objects, we need to be creative in our approach and/or use specific filters to get the job done.

From areas with severe light pollution, high-magnification imaging of deep space objects can be achieved using the following techniques

How does pollution affect environment, how does pollution affect humans, how does water pollution affect humans health, how can pollution affect humans, how does air pollution affect humans, how does oil pollution affect humans, how does marine pollution affect humans, how does plastic pollution affect humans, how does ocean pollution affect humans, how does air pollution affect humans health, how does water pollution affect humans, how does noise pollution affect humans
