A key issue we need to address more is the mental health of seafarers. On many ships and in society at large, this topic is still avoided and as a result is often under-discussed and ignored.
Factors Influencing Carers’ Hope
The Mental Health Wheel is divided into six different areas. When all these areas are adequately supported, your mental health is good and secure. You are your best potential. When many areas are not adequately supported, the wheel becomes harder to turn smoothly, which means your mental health suffers. Climate change increases mental health risks for Canadians. The impacts of a changing climate may exceed the ability of Canadians and their health care institutions to adapt effectively and result in poor mental health outcomes, particularly in the most marginalized communities. A comprehensive review of the literature published in 2000-2017 examined the risks, impacts and vulnerabilities associated with climate change and mental health. In this review, the authors reassess the evidence from this comprehensive review and highlight factors influencing resilience to the mental health consequences of climate change. The results of this review reveal eleven key factors influencing adaptability: social capital; A sense of community; Public assistance; access to assets; community preparedness; Cross-sectoral/circular cooperation; vulnerability and optimization assessments; communication and outreach; mental health literacy; and culturally relevant resources. Canadian decision-makers’ attention to these factors will support proactive and effective management of the mental health consequences of climate change.
Canadians are vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including those on mental health. The concept of mental health is included in the definition of psychosocial health. Psychosocial health refers to mental and social well-being [1]. Mental health outcomes related to climate change affect the way people think, act, feel and interact, and can arise from disasters such as floods or hurricanes or from understanding the long-term effects of climate. Shift [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15]. Mental health issues related to climate change include mental illness. Mental illness refers to moderate to severe mental disorders [15] and mental challenges [15, 16] as well as conditions that result in positive mental health outcomes [15, 17, 18].
Communication About Mental Health
Recently, a scoping review by Hayes and Poland (2018) identified and synthesized data from the international literature on climate change and mental health-related risks, impacts and vulnerabilities, focusing on the Canadian context [2]. Briefly, a scoping review refers to a type of literature review where a researcher maps evidence in a specific field of study, organizes this evidence and presents a narrative about the evidence [19]. Lack of attention in the international literature on climate change and mental health concerns psychosocial adaptation to a changed climate. This issue is particularly salient in Canada, where temperatures are double the global average [20] and both mitigation and adaptation efforts are needed to protect human and planetary health.
