Uber Teams Up With Waymo for Driverless Robotaxi Ride Service

Uber will now offer riders the option of hailing a driverless car. The ride service has teamed up with autonomous driving technology company Waymo, which also happens to be a subsidiary of Google-owner Alphabet.

With the new partnership, Uber is integrating autonomous cars into its platform, beginning with Waymo’s current operating territory in Phoenix, Arizona. The area spans 180 square miles, making it the largest territory serviced by autonomous cars in the world.

Not only will users be able to ride in driverless vehicles, but they’ll also be able to have their Uber Eats delivered by them. In tandem with Uber’s own service, Waymo users will still be able to hail cars via the dedicated Waymo app.

“Uber provides access to a global and reliable marketplace across mobility, delivery, and freight,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said. “Fully autonomous driving is quickly becoming part of everyday life, and we’re excited to bring Waymo’s incredible technology to the Uber platform.”
