Prince Harry appeared ‘relaxed’ and ‘very smiley’ at the Coronation of King Charles III, according to Gyles Brandreth.

The former politician turned broadcaster was a guest at the historic event in Westminster Abbey over the weekend and he has hit back at the idea Harry was anything other than ‘friendly’ as he attended to celebrate his father.

Appearing on This Morning, he said: ‘I have to say about Harry, it’s interesting. The newspapers can give you any story they want because they can choose the picture they use.

‘But if you were there, Harry came in looking relaxed, normal, friendly, handsome and was very smiley and easy with everybody. Throughout the time in the cathedral – that’s all I saw, in the abbey – you couldn’t fault him.’

The ITV daytime show’s host Craig Doyle added: ‘You say that, I watched the pictures this morning and I just thought, this guy looks like he’s quite relaxed and having a nice time.’

Gyles agreed, insisting he didn’t notice ‘any awkwardness’ from Harry during the Coronation.

He said: ‘Exactly. He was friendly with the congregation, with the soldiers, and you see with Beatrice and Eugenie, he was with his cousins and he was totally at ease. There didn’t seem to be any awkwardness at all.’

However, Gyles did have an awkward moment of his own as he ended up coming in late and getting ushered to the wrong seat.

He admitted: ‘There were 2,300 people there and I arrived a little bit late, but I did manage to get in and I was shown where my seat was. I sat down in it, and a moment later there was Lionel Richie saying, “I think this is my seat”.

‘I sat in Lionel Richie’s seat. Can you imagine the humiliation?’

It all worked out for Gyles, who was ‘very honoured’ when he found himself sat next to Australian soldier Keith Payne, a Victoria Cross recipient.

‘Anyway, so I got up and I shuffled to the other end to the row and I went to my seat, which was the equivalent on the other side. I’d gone to the wrong place,’ he added.

‘But I was very honoured because I was sitting next door to a recipient of the Victoria Cross, Keith Payne.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
