Ibuprofen belongs to a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and is widely used over-the-counter to treat pain and fever. Aldrin Gomes, a professor in the Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior in the School of Biological Sciences at UC Davis, said ibuprofen is known to cause heart problems and increase the risk of stroke, but people have little doubt about its use. In the men’s livers, the researchers observed changes in at least 34 metabolic pathways, including those that help regulate some important components of health: amino acids, hormones, vitamins, and the release of intracellular reactive oxygen species and hydrogen peroxide.

Based on the team’s findings, people are advised to take ibuprofen with caution, making sure not to take more than the recommended dose, and best not to use the drug if symptoms are mild.
