Zendaya and 16 Other Celebrities Who Don't Eat Meat

There was a time when vegans and vegetarians flew under the radar. Over the past decade, however, more and more celebrities have abstained from eating meat. From the love of animals to various health benefits, numerous reasons may inspire someone to become a vegan or vegetarian. Regardless of the motivation, these are all popular celebrities who don’t eat meat.

Zendaya

The Spider-Man star first considered abstaining from meat when she was only a child. However, Zendaya didn’t officially take the plunge until a few years ago. The transition to vegetarianism can be rough, but Zendaya has no regrets. After watching PETA’s 2009 documentary Glass Walls, she became an advocate for cruelty-free living. The film alleges that “if slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian”

Zendaya says she no longer misses the taste of meat, with only one exception: her mom’s turkey burgers. Still, this doesn’t outweigh her desire to make the world a safer place for animals.

Ellen Page

A proud lesbian, Ellen Page often speaks out about LGBTQ pride, but she also advocates for animals. The Juno star is a longtime vegan who once said, “Why are vegans made fun of while the inhumane factory farming process regards animals and the natural world merely as commodities to be exploited for profit?”

Jessica Chastain

She began as a vegetarian, but Jessica Chastain has advocated for an end to animal cruelty as a vegan for 14 years. An early investor in Beyond Meat, the X-Men star joined the company on Wall Street as it became the first vegan meat company to go public. Chastain shared the experience with her two million Instagram followers, spreading the word about the resources saved by eating a Beyond Burger versus a traditional meat version.

James Cromwell

The beloved movie Babe did more than make James Cromwell a household name; it also changed his eating habits. It’s not hard to imagine someone eliminating meat from their diet after staring at a famous pig day after day. Since Babe, Cromwell has become an animal activist and a famous vegan.

Ariana Grande

Rooted in a love of animals and care for her own health, Grande has been a vegan for many years. She once said, “I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding. But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length.” Studies show the health benefits of a plant-based diet include improving kidney function, protecting against certain cancers, and lowering your risk of a heart attack.

Ellen DeGeneres

A famous vegan, Ellen uses her talk show to promote an end to animal cruelty. The comedian even concludes her shows by saying, “Be kind to one another.” DeGeneres’s words extend to animals, too. As an inspiration for kindness and inclusion, she and her wife Portia own several dogs and cats.

Joaquin Phoenix

The Walk the Line star has been a vegan since he was four years old. An outspoken animal advocate, Joaquin Phoenix supports Mercy for Animals and is an executive producer of What the Health. The actor even narrated the powerful documentary, Earthlings, which moved DeGeneres to become a vegan.

Woody Harrelson

The Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri actor has been a vegan for over 10 years. In fact, he eats an almost exclusively raw diet. Woody Harrelson says if he consumes a cooked meal, he feels his energy drop. The star is one of the few on this list who chose veganism almost entirely for its health benefits, specifically increased energy.

Miley Cyrus

A vegan since 2014, Miley Cyrus and her husband/fellow vegan, Liam Hemsworth, have seven dogs, three cats, a fish, two pigs, and four horses. Cyrus even ensures her outfits are vegan, which means no silk or leather among other things. She works closely with major labels and has even tried her own hand at vegan design. The singer recently partnered with Converse to launch her own line of ethical shoes.

Liam Hemsworth

Some may think Cyrus is the reason Hemsworth went vegan, but that credit goes to Harrelson. On the set of Hunger Games together, Harrelson made a strong impression on the Australian star. Hemsworth told Men’s Journal, “After all the information I gathered about the mistreatment of animals, I couldn’t continue to eat meat.”

Mayim Bialik

This Big Bang Theory star is more than a brilliant scientist and actress, she’s also a vegan. Mayim Bialik joined PETA to advocate for veganism and has even created her own cookbook. The actress began as a vegetarian at the age of 19 and gradually became a vegan as she read Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer.

Peter Dinklage

A vegetarian for over 15 years, the Game of Thrones star became a vegan in 2014. Peter Dinklage’s partnership with Cruelty-Free International helps promote the Humane Cosmetics Act to end cosmetic animal testing. He also uses his fame to campaign for Farm Sanctuary and PETA. The actor once said, “Testing cosmetics on animals is a cruel, outdated, and unnecessary practice.” He also owns a dog named Kevin and advocates for adoption over buying animals from breeders.

Drew Barrymore

This A-list star refused to allow any real meat on set while filming the Netflix show Santa Clarita Diet. She may play a character who develops a taste for human flesh, but Drew Barrymore lives a vegetarian lifestyle in real life and is a long-time animal rights activist.

Brad Pitt

The Fight Club star sustained a vegan lifestyle even when his now ex-wife Angelina Jolie did not. Brad Pitt even commented that he dislikes that his children eat meat. An animal and environmental activist, the actor claims the damage caused by methane gases from cattle should be reason enough to go vegan.

Kristen Bell

The Frozen star has been a vegetarian since she was a child purely because she didn’t like the way meat smelled or tasted. Recently she became a vegan due to her love for animals and desire to live a life free of animal cruelty.

Milo Ventimiglia

Milo is actually a lifetime vegetarian. His parents raised their family (even their dog) as vegetarians, and Milo continued the lifestyle into adulthood. Besides a few bites of meat as a teenager to “see what he was missing” the This is Us star has never eaten meat.

Casey Affleck

Ben Affleck’s younger brother has been vegan for more than 15 years. The Manchester by the Sea actor isn’t shy about his reasons. He told PETA, “When people ask me why I don’t eat meat or any other animal products, I say because they are unhealthy and they are the product of a violent and inhumane industry.” It doesn’t get much clearer than that. He also speaks out against animal abuse in circuses.
