Will Smith jets to India for spiritual purposes one month after Oscars slap

Will Smith has ventured out to India for “spiritual purposes” one month on from slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.

The 53 year old flew to the other side of the globe seeking spiritual help after receiving a 10-year ban from attending the awards ceremony following the incident which occurred onstage mid-show.

Since the Oscars slap, Will — who called his actions at the event “shocking, painful and inexcusable” — had kept completely out of the spotlight before his trip as fears were raised that his career was in jeopardy.

The Men in Black star is now understood, according to reports, to be taking a month out to “practice yoga and meditation” as he focuses on healing himself and reflecting on his behaviour.

Last month, the actor walked up to comedian Chris onstage at this year’s Oscar ceremony and slapped him across the face following a joking comparison he made in reference to wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

Jada had been previously open about shaving her head in response to dealing with the alopecia she suffers from.

Will resigned his position from the Academy following the public incident and was later handed out his punishment from the Academy governing board in a statement released earlier this month.

“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behaviour we saw Mr Smith exhibit onstage,” it read.

"The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.

"This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behaviour is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted."

Following the news of Will’s Oscar ban, Jada confirmed this week that the Smith family would speak on the incident in an upcoming episode of her online show Red Table Talk.

A message inserted at the beginning of the show’s latest episode read: “The Smith family has been focusing on deep healing.

"Some of the discoveries around our healing will be shared when the time calls.”
