A deeply emotional Julia Bradbury took to Instagram to share all the details of her recent health struggle.

“Goodbye left boob!” the 51-year-old TV presenter had lamented earlier in view of her 177,000 followers.

Julia shared the post to raise awareness and help others fight the deadly disease by keeping the vital warning signs in sight.

“Here’s my boob shot for Instagram!” she joked, initially.

“You can tell your partner/granddad/brother/sister you’ve seen my boob now!”

However, there was an important message beneath the joke, as she explained that having a large amount of internal breast tissue, in comparison to fleshy areas of fat, can increase the risk of cancer – and make it more difficult to detect.

The actual density of the breast tissue, rather than the “fatty” regions is what is key.

“Yes women with dense breasts do have a higher risk of breast cancer than those with fatty breasts,” she wrote.

“The medical world isn’t certain why.

“This increased risk is separate from the effect of dense breasts, on the ability to read a mammogram. Dense breast tissue can make it more difficult to interpret a mammogram because cancer and the dense breast tissue both appear white on the image.”

However she reassured: “Digital mammograms do allow for a more detailed analysis, so mammograms are still an effective screening tool.”

“My breasts are described as Heterogeneously dense,” she shared.

“40% of women fall into this category, which is described as ‘some scattered areas of density’ but the majority of the breast tissue is non-dense.”

She urged: “To give yourself the best chance of catching breast cancer early & having successful treatment don’t rely on routine screening.

“Stay breast aware, know what your breasts look & feel like normally, & be on the lookout for unusual changes.”

“I’m reminded constantly to take care of the four pillars of health: reduce stress levels (mindfulness or meditation), stay physically active (exercise at least 4 times a week), stay socially connected & engaged, eat a healthy, balanced diet (real, whole food, not processed packaged food).”

Her post also referenced some Instagram accounts that could offer help and guidance, such as the Pink Ribbon Foundation.

Prior to her mastectomy, the Countryfile star had posted a topless photo on Instagram in an attempt to publicly come to terms with the changes she knew her body would be undergoing.

“I’m going for my last walk in this body,” she had shared candidly. “I’m going for my last walk with these boobs”.

The traumatised TV presenter has undergone therapy to beat her demons and has admitted that she has wept after reading messages online from fans.

She even broke down in tears on-air earlier this year, while discussing her diagnosis on the Women’s Hour show.

Yet, in spite of the difficulty, she hopes that making some of her journey public may save lives in future if it raises awareness of the need to get checked.
