The Biggest Loser‘s Bob Harper has been asked to his dip his toe into the ‘What do you think of Lizzo’s body?’ arena.
Especially after caustic remarks by his former The Biggest Loser colleague, Jillian Michaels, many are curious to know if he agrees with Michaels’ opinion.
Here’s what the now-host of the weight loss reality show had to say.
What Jillian Michaels said about Lizzo
Michaels didn’t mince words in sharing her feelings about Lizzo and the body positivity mindset that she feels is much too prevalent. For Michaels, the movement sends people the message that an unhealthy weight is acceptable and should be tolerated. She made clear that acceptance of one’s self is worthwhile, but that good health should also be a priority.
“Why are we celebrating her body?” Michaels said on BuzzFeed News’ Twitter morning show AM to DM. “Why does it matter? That’s what I’m saying, Like why aren’t we celebrating her music? ‘Cause it isn’t gonna be awesome if she gets diabetes. I’m just being honest. I love her music, my kid loves her music. But there’s never a moment where I’m like, ‘I’m so glad that she’s overweight.’”
Michaels was roundly criticized for her view and responded on social media.
“As I’ve stated repeatedly, we are all beautiful, worthy, and equally deserving,” she tweeted. “I also feel strongly that we love ourselves enough to acknowledge there are serious health consequences that come with obesity – heart disease, diabetes, cancer to name only a few. I would never wish these for ANYONE and I would hope we prioritize our health because we LOVE ourselves and our bodies.”
Lizzo’s reaction to Michaels
For Lizzo, this isn’t the first time she’s had to defend herself against those who take issue with her weight and size.
She told Sam Smith for a V Magazine feature in 2019, “I have felt excluded my entire life… So my movement is for everyone.”
“I love my body,” Lizzo told Smith. “No matter what angle you shoot it at… my body is just so f***ing beautiful all the time. I may talk s**t about it sometimes, but f**k. She’s still a bad b**ch.”
As for her reaction to Michaels’ comments about her, Lizzo backhandedly directed her Instagram post comments Michaels’ way, saying, “This is my life. I have done nothing wrong. I forgive myself for thinking I was wrong in the first place. I deserve to be happy.”
Here’s what Bob Harper had to say
As for Bob Harper, the 54-year-old host of The Biggest Loser made his point clear: he was not going to comment on Lizzo’s body or health unless the singer herself asked him for his opinion.
Harper was the ultimate diplomat talking to Us Weekly this month about Lizzo, “When it comes to my thoughts on anyone, I’m never going to give my opinion to anyone that’s not asking for it.”
He told Yahoo Health this month, “I can’t speak for [Jillian], but until I know your body and your health, I can’t make any assumptions. . . Until Lizzo’s gonna ask me what my opinion on her health is, it’s none of my business.”
