Alan Titchmarsh ‘very cross’ about weight gain after ITV host suffers accident

Alan Titchmarsh discusses the benefits of gardening in lockdown

Alan Titchmarsh has opened up about his life in lockdown as the former Gardeners’ World host spoke candidly about his health. The ITV presenter revealed that prior to lockdown he had been working on losing weight.

Speaking in a new interview, the 71-year-old revealed he broke his ankle back in September.

As a result, Alan has been forced to put his feet up which has added to the weight gain as he admitted to putting on half a stone.

He revealed being active in the garden had helped in keeping the weight off.

The gardening expert has been having to hobble around on crutches since his ankle injury and has been left “cross” about it.

Alan explained: “I was doing up to 26,000 steps a day and eating like a horse, but still losing weight because I was doing all the manual work.

“Then I broke my ankle at the beginning of September – I slipped on wet grass and was on crutches for six weeks.”

He added: “So I’ve put half a stone back on, which made me very cross because I was determined to keep it off.”

The ITV presenter explained it has been “frustrating” being unable to do everyday things for himself.

“It was very frustrating because you can’t even carry a cup of tea,” Alan continued to Radio Times.

“I found having to rely on somebody else doing absolutely everything for me really hard.

“I’m not a terribly good patient; I don’t do ill.”

Alan’s comments come after the garden presenter was forced to undergo knee surgery two years ago due to all the time he spent bending down doing gardening.

“I have had what is known as knee arthroscopy on both my knees and my surgeon did it to investigate the reason for my knee pain.

“While he was doing it he removed all my damaged tissue and cartilage – I had it all cleared out and they feel so much better.”

The TV star added: “I’ve got bad knees as a result of a lot of kneeling over the years from gardening and it has got a bit frayed in there but I am a spring chicken again now.”

Alan has previously opened up about another incident which occurred while gardening, as he revealed he almost broke his finger.

“My hand slipped and the full weight of the hammer came down, sandwiching my middle finger between post and shaft.

“The air was blue. The finger was blue. Squashed, but not broken,” he explained in his Gardeners’ World column.
