Adele discusses end of her marriage to Simon Konecki: It just wasn’t right for me anymore

Adele has candidly discussed the end of her marriage to Simon Konecki in her first interview in five years to British Vogue.

The superstar, 33, separated from the charity CEO in 2019 with the divorce being finalised earlier this year. They share son Angelo, eight, together.

Speaking about the end of her marriage, Adele insisted that "nothing bad happened" and that it just "wasn't right" for her anymore.

The Hello hitmaker told the publication: "It just wasn’t right for me anymore. I didn’t want to end up like a lot of other people I knew. It wasn’t miserable miserable, but I would have been miserable had I not put myself first. But, yeah, nothing bad happened or anything like that."

Adele also revealed that she wrote a lot of her album for her son, Angelo, she said: "My son has had a lot of questions. Really good questions, really innocent questions, that I just don’t have an answer for. 'Why can’t you still live together?’'

"I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he’s in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness. It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal."

Adele added: "It’s not like anyone’s having a go at me but it’s like, I left the marriage. Be kind to me as well."

Talking about her "lowest patch", Adele admitted that she was "really embarrassed" about "that thing of not being able to make something work" because "we’ve been trained as women to keep trying."

Despite the split, she remains on great terms with her ex-husband.

“I definitely chose the perfect person to have my child with,” she said. “That – after making a lot of knee-jerk reactions – is one of my proudest things I’ve ever done.”

The star added that after going through a divorce her "requirements are sky-high" as there is a "very big pair of shoes to fill" – before introducing her new man Rich Paul, who she opens up about for the first time in the chat.

Adele is currently gearing up for the release of the long-awaited follow-up to her third album, 25, which was released in 2015.

Her long-awaited comeback has been rumoured since mid-2020 and was finally confirmed earlier this week, when the star posted a teaser for her new single on Instagram.
